Book Description
The Thomson Scattering Diagnostic on TMX was built to measure the electron temperature in the plug. The design was based on the 2XII system built by Tom Simonen. Substantial improvements were realized over the original design, these include: (1) improved sensitivity, (2) simultaneous multiple position sampling, (3) multiple pulse capability, (4) achromatic imaging, (5) vacuum alignment capability, (6) high reliability, and (7) built in calibration and performance monitoring.

Book Description
This Thomson scattering diagnostic system is used to measure the electron temperature and density of the east mirror plug of the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The measurements are made by firing a high-power ruby laser pulse through the plasma where the electrons then re-radiate a small fraction of the light. Because of the velocity of the electrons, the wavelength of the re-radiated light is Doppler shifted. The width of the Doppler-shifted wavelength spectrum is a measure of the temperature of the electrons in the plasma, and the total amount of re-radiated light is proportional to the electron density.

Book Description
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) requires optical diagnostics for measuring shock velocities in shock physics experiments. The velocity interferometer for any reflector measures shock velocities at a location remote to the NIF target chamber. Our team designed two systems, one for a polar port orientation, and the other to accommodate two equatorial ports. The polar-oriented design requires a 48-m optical relay to move the light from inside the target chamber to a separately housed measurement and laser illumination station. The currently operational equatorial design requires a much shorter relay of 21 m. Both designs posed significant optomechanical challenges due to the long optical path length, large quantity of optical elements, and stringent NIF requirements. System design had to tightly control the use of lubricants and materials, especially those inside the vacuum chamber; tolerate earthquakes and radiation; and consider numerous other tolerance, alignment, and steering adjustment issues. To ensure compliance with NIF performance requirements, we conducted a finite element analysis.

Book Description
A two-dimensional Thomson scattering system has been designed for the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF), a torsatron experiment at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The system is a modification of the Thomson scattering system used on the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) tokamak. It will provide measurements of electron temperature (T/sub e/) and density (n/sub e/) at 15 points along a vertical chord. With multiple shots, a T/sub e/ and n/sub e/ map of a toroidal cross section of ATF can be obtained. The horizontal Thomson scattering viewing port is offset by 15° toroidally from the ports through which the vertical laser beam passes. The modifications to the ISX-B Thomson scattering system are either changes required to adapt the system to the ATF device geometry or changes that result in improvements to the original system. This paper deals with the mechanical design aspects of the laser light baffle plates that reduce the amount of extraneous light entering the plasma, the upper and lower vacuum extensions that contain the baffles and attach to the ATF vacuum vessel, the entrance window assembly, the laser dump assembly, the viewing window and shutter assembly, and the alignment target mechanism and drive used to determine the ampping of data points in the plasma cross section.
