Such shrinkage is, of course, due to many causes. Morrison (43) made a survey of the situation in American colleges and universities. He sent a questionnaire to three hundred and forty-two deans in thirty-two state universities, fourteen privately endowed colleges and universities, and eight women's colleges. Opinions concerning the proportion of stu dents having mental difficulties varied considerably - from about two to twenty per cent; but many educators thought there was a need for work in mental hygiene.
