Author: Alain Badiou
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 135001477X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 137
Book Description
Offering a piercing indictment of what we have let ourselves become, this short, critical work is a damning critique of the current age and of the democratic systems that characterize it. Alain Badiou argues that any truly radical politics must begin with dismantling the obscene (or pornographic) qualities of neoliberal capitalism. In The Pornographic Age he asks us to hold up a mirror to ourselves and confront the debasement of the political realities in which we live, the shock of which must galvanize us into action. It is only through this realization, this crucial confrontation with the perversity with which we conduct our daily lives that we can prompt true revolution. Including an afterword from international Badiou scholars A. J. Bartlett and Justin Clemens and a commentary by William Watkin, this book is a philosophical call to arms: Badiou's radical indictment of the current age is an exciting, no-holds-barred exploration of both how we live and how we might live.

Architecture in the Age of Pornography
Author: Nadir Lahiji
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000440915
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 137
Book Description
Architecture, and its pedagogy in the academy, is dominated by the technology of image production that veils the ‘naked power’ behind its operation. It conforms to the principles of cultural logic of the society of the spectacle, consistent with neoliberal capitalism. The problem with this dominant pedagogy is that it violates the fundamental ethical imperative, putting architecture in direct contradiction with the ‘common good’. In addition, it has let architecture enter the brothel of pornographic capitalism which turns every object into an object of obscene gratification of the senses. In this book, Nadir Lahiji adopts Alain Badiou’s thesis from The Pornographic Age to demonstrate that contemporary architecture is in absolute complicity with the pornographic present. The traits that Badiou identifies in this age are manifestly visible in architectural surfaces which are subordinated to the same ‘regime of images’. Similarly to Badiou’s political indictments of the society which has given rise to the pornographic present, the book condemns the architecture that has lent its service to the same society with a license to consummate its transgression to better cater to the imperative of the ‘regime of images’. Transposing the conceptual categories in Badiou’s analysis to the critique of architecture’s pornographic turn in contemporary society, the book constructs a conceptual framework by which to demonstrate the specific manifestations of pornography in building. The book is aimed at architecture students at higher graduate and post-graduate levels.

Pornland
Author: Gail Dines
Publisher: Beacon Press
ISBN: 0807044539
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
Professor Gail Dines has written about and researched the porn industry for over two decades. She attends industry conferences, interviews producers and performers, and speaks to hundreds of men and women each year about their experience with porn. Students and educators describe her work as “life changing.” In Pornland—the culmination of her life’s work—Dines takes an unflinching look at porn and its affect on our lives. Astonishingly, the average age of first viewing porn is now 11.5 years for boys, and with the advent of the Internet, it’s no surprise that young people are consuming more porn than ever. But, as Dines shows, today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy. As porn culture has become absorbed into pop culture, a new wave of entrepreneurs are creating porn that is even more hard-core, violent, sexist, and racist. To differentiate their products in a glutted market, producers have created profitable niche products—like teen sex, torture porn, and gonzo—in order to entice a generation of desensitized users. Going from the backstreets to Wall Street, Dines traces the extensive money trail behind this multibillion-dollar industry—one that reaps more profits than the film and music industries combined. Like Big Tobacco—with its powerful lobbying groups and sophisticated business practices—porn companies don’t simply sell products. Rather they influence legislators, partner with mainstream media, and develop new technologies like streaming video for cell phones. Proving that this assembly line of content is actually limiting our sexual freedom, Dines argues that porn’s omnipresence has become a public health concern we can no longer ignore.

Hindsight
Author: Howie Gordon
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781593937874
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 692
Book Description
HINDSIGHT is one man's remarkably revealing story about sex and relationships, on the silver screen and in his private life. Howie Gordon (screen name Richard Pacheco) was an award-winning actor during The Golden Age of Porn, whose memoir does not duck the question, "What about love?" With charm, passion, wit, and what may best be described as a crude elegance, Gordon's story takes us back to the fabled Baby Boomer era, when erotic films took a dramatic step closer to mainstream entertainment in America. His memoir recounts scenes with Marilyn Chambers, Georgina Spelvin, Seka, Annette Haven, Kay Parker and many others. This was the heyday of John Holmes, John Leslie, Jamie Gillis and Anthony Spinelli, and they are all characters in what may prove to be the finest inside story to ever come out of the fascinating world of Adult Film during its Golden Age. Ultimately, HINDSIGHT is a surprising love story: here in a triumph over incredible odds, is an unlikely victory for true love, common sense, and the American way. Full of pictures and high spirits - this memoir is a great read, whether you know the world of porn, or are just a curious reader. "It was the time of storytelling with an X Rating, and there's no one better to tell this story than my friend Howie Gordon." - Whoopi Goldberg "Howie Gordon writes about life as a porn star with more honesty, integrity and humor than any other porn star, ever You will laugh, cry, and fall in love. I hope his book gets made into a movie, because it will be a one-of-a-kind blockbuster." - Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D. Post Porn Modernist "Mark Twain meets Don Juan-a delectable fusion of brains and balls " - Dr. Marianna Beck, Ph.D. The Material Culture of Sex

Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography
Author: Jeffrey Escoffier
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 197882016X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
Hardcore pornographic films combine fantasy and real sex to create a unique genre of entertainment. Pornographic films are also historical documents that give us access to the sexual behavior and eroticism of different historical periods. This book shows how the making of pornographic films is a social process that draws on the fantasies, sexual scripts, and sexual identities of performers, writers, directors, and editors to produce sexually exciting videos and movies. Yet hardcore pornographic films have also created a body of knowledge that constitutes, in this digital age, an enormous archive of sexual fantasies that serve as both a form of sex education and self-help guides. Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography focuses on sex and what can be learned about it from pornographic representations.
