Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine how collegiate athletes perceive their coach's behaviors and if there are differences in the perceived effectiveness of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching styles. Method: A cluster analysis was conducted among collegiate athletes (N = 306) from the Midwest portion of the United States. The athletes were given questionnaires to report on perceived autonomy-support and control exhibited by their coach, as well as the perceived effectiveness of their coach in terms of confidence in their coach.Results: Preliminary analyses found that autonomy support was positively related to confidence in the coach, whereas controlling behaviors were negatively related to confidence in the coach. The relationship between autonomy support and confidence in the coach was particularly strong (r=.79). In the main analysis, seven profiles representing athletes that perceived various combinations of low, high, and moderate levels of autonomy-supportive and controlling behaviors were found. Results also revealed that the confidence the athletes had in their coach tended to decline across profiles as the degree of perceived autonomy support declined. Conclusion: Experiencing higher levels of autonomy-supportive behavior leads athletes to be more confident in their coach. Coaches that are perceived to be high in autonomy-supportive behavior and low in controlling behavior are the most effective in coaching. The least effective coaches are those coaches who are perceived as low in autonomy-supportive behaviors and high in controlling behaviors. The present findings are most useful for coaches and athletic departments.

"Recent literature suggests that coaches play a significant role in creating a climate that fosters self-determined motivation among athletes. Coaching style influences athlete perception, motivation, and performance. Research supports that an autonomy-supportive coaching style is an effective motivational tool for coaches, whereas a controlling coaching style is ineffective. Previous research has shown that an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style increases self-determined motivation among athletes. However, previous research typically includes only one interpersonal coaching style. In addition, there is minimal research looking at needs satisfaction mediating the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation through the SDT continuum. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with high school athletes' motivation as well as needs satisfaction. High school athletes from the Western region of North Carolina (n=162) completed the Coach Behavior Scale in Sport, Controlling Coach Behavior Scale, Behavior Regulation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze relationships among coaching behaviors, needs satisfaction, and motivation. The hypotheses were 1) autonomy-supportive coaching behavior is positively related to higher forms of self-determined motivation and needs satisfaction, 2) controlling coaching behavior is negatively related to self-determined forms of motivation and needs satisfaction, and3) needs satisfaction mediates the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation. As predicted, autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with higher forms of self-determined motivation (intrinsic: r=.463; integrated: r=.512; and identified: r=.558), whereas controlling coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with more extrinsic forms of motivation (external: r=.411 and amotivation: r=.279). Autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively correlated with all three needs (competence: r=.479, autonomy: r=.583, and relatedness: r=.582), and in turn, the three needs positively predicted higher forms of self-determined motivation. Multiple regression results indicate that the relationships of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with motivation are partially mediated by perceived needs satisfaction, but the relationships differed for different forms of motivation. Evidence for mediation was strongest for intrinsic motivation, and for integrated motivation and identified motivation, autonomous coach behavior added to the prediction suggesting the relationship was not fully mediated by needs satisfaction. For external regulation, controlling coaching behavior was a strong direct predictor with no evidence of mediation. The results indicate that autonomy-supportive coaching behavior predicts need satisfaction and enhances athlete motivation whereas controlling coaching behavior reduces self-determined motivation. Therefore, coaches are advised to use strategies that promote autonomy, such as providing options, giving athletes opportunities to make decisions, and allowing athletes to feel involved."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

ABSTRACT: Although autonomy supportive coaching has been correlated with both positive performance and psychosocial outcomes, little research has evaluated athletes’ perceptions of autonomy supportive coaching. In this study, autonomy supportive coaching behaviors were evaluated from the perspective of 149 NCAA Division II and III swimmers. Athletes evaluated hypothetical coaches in terms of perceived autonomy support and perceptions of the coach. Season success and autonomy support were manipulated in the scenarios about the hypothetical coaches. Participants who read about the autonomy supportive coaching perceived higher autonomy support than those who read controlling coaching scenarios. Participants who read the successful season scenario reported higher autonomy support and increased positive coach perception than those who read about an unsuccessful season. This finding indicates that a coach with a winning season is more highly regarded than the same coach, exhibiting the same behaviors with an unsuccessful season. Findings have implications for coaching research, education, and training.

Various sport associations employ coaches to shape the environment that children and youth experience. Specifically, a coach's style of interaction often directly or indirectly influences youth participation and motivation. While research suggests that adopting autonomy-supportive coaching behaviors enhance children and youth well-being and promote overall healthy development, not every coach uses this particular coaching strategy. The present study therefore sought to examine the determinants of coaches' autonomy-supportive behaviors. The constructs under investigation included ego-involvement, coaching efficacy, perceived athlete competence, and pressure. Data were collected from 100 coaches who currently coach an individual or team sport within the Montreal region. The results demonstrated that motivation efficacy, a sub-factor within coaching efficacy, and perceived athlete competence were positively related to coaches' autonomy-supportive behaviors. The findings present important implications for practitioners regarding training and development opportunities. In addition, suggestions are provided for managers to superimpose the model on the supervisor-employee relationship.
