Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 43 Among the Sons of Delaware who were most noted for patriotism during the Revolutionary struggle, Caesar Rodney and his brother Thomas stand in the front rank. Caesar is so well known as one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence that no further mention of him is needed for the purposes of this paper. Thomas, his younger brother, was born in Sussex County, Delaware, on June 4, 1744. He received as good an education as could be had at that time in a small country town, and then prepared himself to enter the legal profession. He was a member of the Council of Safety of Delaware in 1775. On August 15,1777, he was appointed clerk of the Supreme Court of Delaware. He was Colonel of the Militia of his native State during part of the Revolutionary War, and rendered valuable service. In 1778 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Kent County Court. I found that the admissions to this bar in 1863 had been six hundred and fifty. The correspondence and labor of collecting information and the compilation of even a partial number of sketches would ex tend over many months, resulting in a large book instead of a modest pamphlet appropriate to this occasion. I there fore undertook to furnish a few sketches only of promi nent lawyers of the last century and earlier years of this. Brief as these must be, they occupy a large space. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 28 Rolling Mill at Manchester, in Allegheny County, to make iron rails. Connected with this mill were two coke furnaces, built in 1863. The company operated the works until Sep tember, 186 7, when they were leased by Springer Harbaugh. On January 1, 1870, Harbaugh, Mathias Owens took pos session as owners, and on August 1, 1874, they failed, when the manufacture of rails was abandoned. The works them selves have long been abandoned A few other iron-rail mills in Western Pennsylvania, including those which were equipped for the manufacture only of mine rails and other light rails, need not be mentioned. Of these mills those which made rails of heavy sections never at any time pro duced any considerable tonnage. It is a noteworthy fact that Allegheny County, with all its enterprise in the manufacture of iron and steel, did not begin to make rails of heavy sec tions until the Superior Rolling Mill was built in 1865. Iron rails are not now made in Western Pennsylvania, except occasionally a very few tons of light rails for lum ber and mine roads. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1915, Vol. 39 It was while engaged in some survey work for the Commissioners, in the summer Of 1761, that he con tracted the influenza. He caught a severe cold on a very warm day towards the end of June, and such was his anxiety to return home for medical treatment that he ceased work and rode sixty miles on horseback in one day, but was able to reach the home of William Blackfan, in Solebury township, to whose daughter Hannah he was engaged, where he died on July 3d, and was buried at Buckingham Meeting House. The long and enervating ride, in his enfeebled condition, hastened his death. The following abstracts are from his will, dated 11mo. 8th, 1760: I, John Watson, Of Buckingham, surveyor, being about to set forth on a journey to New Castle, on Delaware, to meet the Com missioners to settle the lines between the Provinces Of Pennsylvania and Maryland gives 250 to Hannah, daughter of William Blackfan, of Sole bury.
