This book provides a picture of English society in the late eighteenth century. The story of one family, "the Parkers", and their day to day life is told, including the activities which took place in each room of their home - the kitchen, library, bedrooms, drawing room, etc., so that through these could be seen the conditions and characteristics of society at large. Saltram was the house that was selected, and so "The Parkers at Saltram" is the center of this story. The Parkers were an actual family that lived in Devonshire, England. John Parker married Theresa Grantham in 1769 and inherited the house from his parents.
