Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament Some years ago I commenced a study of the Parables of the Old Testament with the purpose of making use of the Parables as material for sermons. I was not disappointed as to the suggestions afforded by such a study; indeed, it opened up for me a rich vein of moral and spiritual truth. But I was surprised to find how little there was in print that would be of help to me in conducting such a study. Book stalls and libraries abound in volumes on the Parables of the New Testament, but nowhere, either in America or Great Britain, could I come on a single book which dealt with the Parables of the Old Testament. Whatever, then, the offenses of this volume, it cannot be laid against it that it traverses a field whose fruits already have been harvested and garnered. As for these Parables, I think I can feel almost like those mariners of the sixteenth century who sailed upon seas that never before had been cleft by the keel of a ship. I have no desire to draw out fine spun distinctions between the different forms of illustrative speech. We used to define them and refine them in our college days; but as a matter of fact, the partitions which divide metaphor from simile, and allegory from parable, and parable from fable, are exceedingly thin. Book Description
Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of Whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament, Explained The Sacred Scriptures are the Word of God, written in a Divine way, and for a Divine purpose. The Divine Word contains messages from God, as a Spiritual Being, to men as spiritual beings. But, in order to bring down the truth to the apprehension of natural-minded men, spiritual truths must be presented in corresponding natural ideas, in natural imagery. "I, Jehovah, thy God, ... have also spoken by the prophets, and have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets." (Hosea xii. 9, 10.) Hence the Bible has a spirit and a body, between which there is the relation of correspondence, as inward and outward counterparts. The word "parable" is used in three senses, - I, as an enigma, or obscure saying; 2, as any figurative discourse; and 3, as a fictitious, but possible, narrative, invented to convey and illustrate a truth. The parables of the New Testament are strictly within the third class. But. on the same exact basis, there are very few parables in the Old Testament. And so, for the treatment of the parables of the Old Testament, the second definition is adopted, which includes, also, fables and visions. Every parable has at least three senses, - I, its narrative sense; 2, its figurative meaning, as applied to other natural persons and things; and 3, its spiritual meaning, illustrating principles operating in the mind. The system of interpretation here employed is that known as " The Science of Correspondences," made known to the Church through Emanuel Swedenborg. As it seemed best to have each explanation of a parable complete in itself, some repetition was unavoidable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus The mode of teaching by parables is one of great antiquity. It was, as we have already seen, practiced under the Old Testament dispensation, and appears to have been very generally afterward adopted by the rabbis even down to the time of Christ. Its advantages are obvious. Experience has demonstrated that this sort of composition is better calculated to command attention, to captivate the imagination, to affect the heart, and to make deep and lasting impressions on the memory, than the most ingenious and most elegant discourses. Besides, the very obscurity in which para bles are sometimes involved has the effect of exciting a greater degree of curiosity and interest, and of urging the mind to a more vigorous exertion of its powers, than any other mode of instruction. There is some thing for the understanding to work upon, and when the concealed meaning is at length elicited, we are apt to value ourselves on the discovery, as the effect of our own penetration and discernment, and for that very rea son to pay more regard to the moral it conveys. Excerpt from Notes on the Parables of the New Testament Perhaps it may be faid, without encroaching on the feel ings of the reader, that mofi of the ideas imbibed by people, in general, in divinity; are received from the pulpit. And while one congregation is attending to explanations of the Parables in one way, another is entertained with different ideas on the fame pafl'ages. When thofe ideas are received, they form quite a difference in the Opinions of chrifiians this diliirnilarity of fentiment engenders twice as much dif affeaion in the heart, where nothing contrary to charity ought to be found this difaffeaion is like a hot bed to the feeds of contention, and roots of bitternefs. Book Description
Excerpt from New Testament Parables for Children: Illustrated by Pictures From the Masters and Original Stories These Lessons on the new-testament Parables are prepared in the belief that historic information about the Bible is of little value to young children, but that, at their impressible age, strong moral influ ences are of the very first importance. In the Author's experience with children, pictures and stories have been found to make far deeper impressions on the minds and hearts of little ones than any other means of teaching. This Manual is designed to aid parents and Sunday-school teachers of young children in using a series of cards, which are duplicates of its illustrated pages. Each Parable may serve for two lessons: the first will naturally centre in the picture the second, in the original story. In the first lesson, let the teacher examine the picture thoroughly with the children, even in its minutest details. The text of Scripture and the verse of poetry may be recited by the children separately or in concert. Then let the story of the Parable be told by the children the teacher may lead them on, if necessary, by questions and hints, but Should have them feel that they tell it. The Parable well in the minds of the children, let a talk follow, for which the ques tions in the Manual are intended only as suggestions and helps. These questions have not dealt with the larger, and what may be called national, interpretation of the Parables, but have taken up only a simple and practical one, the larger one not being profitable or even possible to children. At the second lesson, recall briefly the story Of the Parable, especially the truth taught in it. Then, as an illustration of this truth, read or tell the story in the Manual. Encourage the children to talk freely about it, and to tell you how it teaches the same lesson that is taught in the Parable, the verse of poetry, and the text of Scripture. For any satisfactory measure of success in the use of these cards, it is absolutely essential that each child should have to himself a card of the lesson taught, that he may take it home, learn the Scripture text and poetry, and become familiar with the story of the Parable before coming to the class. It is also exceedingly important that he have the card in his hand for constant reference during the entire lesson or les sons. Procure, therefore, as many sets of cards as there are pupils in the class. It is pleasant and profitable to give the child the card for his own when the study of it is finished; but if economy must be considered, the use of the envelope will preserve the cards so that they may be used by several classes in succession. Take up the envelopes at the beginning of the lesson, to be given out again at the close of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Parables of the New Testament Practically Unfolded Waiving all these, he has kept steadily in View his original aim, and believing that there is a deep spiritual meaning in each one of these similitudes, which it becomes as as Christians to know and understand, he has sought to develop this with clearness and fidelity. If he shall be the means of alluring others to a more earnest study of these inimitable Parables, these apples of gold in pictures of silver, and to a better understanding of their precepts and doctrine, he shall devoutly thank God, and feel that.
