Book Description
Do you suffer from panic, anxiety, and fear in your day-to-day life? Do you often avoid social situations, activities like driving, or even going to the store because of a fear of being overwhelmed or triggering a panic attack? You might be interested to know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders in the United States. In Anxiety and Avoidance, psychologist and anxiety disorder expert Michael Tompkins presents a universal protocol to help you cope with anxiety, panic, and fear, regardless of your particular mental health diagnosis. This universal protocol is based on David H. Barlow's "unified protocol," and is a cognitive behavioral approach. Tompkins also draws on mindfulness-based therapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that have been used successfully in the treatment of anxiety disorders for years. The book includes present-moment awareness (mindfulness) techniques, motivational tools for overcoming experiential avoidance, and cognitive tools for reframing anxiety and fear. In addition, you will learn how to use your personal values as a vehicle for lasting change. While most anxiety treatments have focused on symptom reduction, this book teaches you the skills needed to better handle the underlying emotional reactions that lead to anxiety and panic in the first place. If you are ready to stop avoiding situations that cause you to panic and get back to living a full life, this book is a powerful resource that can help you make a lasting change using an innovative, transdiagnostic approach.

Book Description
This book discusses five anxiety disorders in relation to everyday experiences that can trigger panic attacks. Each is seen as a distinct problem and can be recognized by a set of more or less predictable characteristics. AGORAPHOBIA is perhaps the most common and most debilitating of the anxiety disorders. It is characterized by fear of going out in public and becoming housebound as a result, but this does not always happen. PANIC DISORDER without agoraphobia is very similar, but fearful thoughts are usually limited to perceptions that some sort of physical collapse may be imminent. SOCIAL PHOBIA is unlike agoraphobia in that sufferers' fears usually involve situations calling for close interaction with other people. SIMPLE PHOBIA concerns fear of specific events or situations. Fear of heights, confined spaces, spiders - these are good examples of simple phobia. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER involves persistent anxiety over a long period. Typically, people are stressed out about two or more major problems - for example related to finances, work or illness. Through a discussion of the causes of these disorders, and the role played by environment, stress, emotions, self-talk, perfectionism and alcohol, we come to the recovery process. What follows is a truly helpful guide for those of us who are living with these disorders. If this includes you, or someone you know, you really need to read this book.

Book Description
"Research on the efficacy of nonpharmacological treatments for the various anxiety disorders has been ongoing for over three decades at our institutions, the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and the University of California, Los Angeles, Anxiety Disorders Behavioral Research Program. Developments in the conceptualization of panic attacks and panic disorder (PD) in the 1980s and 1990s made possible significant improvements in the psychological treatment of PD and the development of panic control treatment (PCT), a treatment for panic disorder. Since then a substantial body of evidence on the efficacy of this intervention and closely related variants containing very similar components has accumulated, and it is stipulated as a first line treatment of choice in clinical practice guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which produces guidelines for the National Health Service in the UK (aPa, 2009; NICE, 2019). In 2013 PCT was evaluated as meeting the criteria for an Evidence Based Program by the Division of Quality and Performance Improvement of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the Public Health Service in the United States. Similarly, the Society of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association (1998) rated the evidence as "strong" in supporting PCT as an evidence-based intervention for panic disorder. After the first strong evidence for the efficacy of this approach began to appear (e.g. Barlow et al., 1989) we recognized the value of a guide outlining the treatment procedures. Hence, the Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Workbook and Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic: Therapist Guide were written and have now been revised. Now in its fifth edition, the revised client workbook is written in a style suitable for the client's direct use, usually under the supervision of a trained professional although it can be used in a self-help format, particularly for less severe cases"--
