"Does it seem reasonable to you that a Regency continues—into an Emperor's thirtieth year " "No, m'lord," Shoka said. "Not to us, either. Not to many of us. We were ready to make that objection—when lord Gitu overran Yijang and Hua.... Assassinations, elsewhere. Hired killers. Bands of mercenaries traveling under imperial orders. The Emperor'sseal, and the Regent's orders. How do we stop such a thing How do we prevent it—when every lord able to lead is apprehended, assassinated, when they strip us of men, even boys out of the fields—go to Saukendar, some said. Go to Saukendar. They urged me to send to you. This time he has to listen, they said. But if I had sent—and Ghita had known—you understand—" Reidi gave an uncomfortable twitch of the shoulders. His horse shifted again. "I had no true hope that you'd come. You'd indicated to the villagers—that you had no wish to hear from anyone. That you would refuse any such petitions—" "You were watching me." "It's my village, m'lord—as the Regent pointed out to me again and again, and threatened my life should you leave that mountain. Of course the word came to me. I tried to get a messenger down the road to you when I knew you'd left Mon.... We believed you'd come back to deal with Ghita and his partisans." Shoka felt cold, cold all the way to the bones. "There are men ready to follow you, lord Saukendar. There are men who've committed their lives to this— We didn't know the hour. We only believed. Now you've come back ..." "It's gripping drama, tightly focussed and inexorable as Taizu herself. Read The Paladin and you'll never settle for another ordinary sword-wielding female." —Faren Miller LOCUS At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management)

A Book of Myths
Author: Jean Lang
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849663752
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
"A Book of Myths" deals in a most entertaining manner with the mythology of Greece and Rome and many other noted lands. Added to the pleasure of the story there is the lure of the legend and the spell of old ways and customs. Not only many of the most celebrated are retold, but also many of the less well-known tales. The aim of the author, it is stated, has been to simplify for those who are not erudite scholars the stories of mythology, to which constant reference is made not only in classic, but in modern poetry, and to direct the attention of readers to poems which are not already known to them. Included are tales of Prometheus, Pygmalion, Orpheus, Perseus, King Midas, Pan, the Lorelei, Baldur and many more.

The Paladin Chronicles Book bundle 1-4
Author: Neil Port
Publisher: Neil Port
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 2088
Book Description
Mega book bundle. Over 1700 pages (6000,000 words) of Epic Fantasy, adventure, love, some historical fantasy and a light sprinkling of humour. All set in ancient times and exotic locations. The story begins with Hakeem, a mercenary from the desert city of Karsh (in what is now Syria). Growing up in a monastery, all he ever wanted was to become a religious monk. He can’t understand why he was refused by the Grand Abbot, whom he loved like a father. The old man told him he was destined to become something called a 'paladin'. Broken hearted and penniless, he runs away making a long journey to join the desert mercenaries fighting in the Greek colonies on the western coast of Turkey. Paladins were very rare , and the Shayvist monks believed they were sent by their God, each with a great task. The old Abbot didn't know that a second child had already been 'sent' but what possible task would require two paladins? After fighting in a war in Greek Turkey, Hakeem rises to the level of a senior commander and is summoned home by the new Grand Abbot of his people. Little does he realise, then, that he will soon be caught up in events that were prophesied two thousands years before. The once mighty Elves are fading. They have lost almost all their magic. Their numbers are shrinking. They no longer live longer than humans and each year they have fewer and fewer children. Their final destruction has been foretold and now the time is all but upon them. They are destined to face barbarian hordes greater than the time of the Aryans accompanied by an ancient sorcerer who can command a demon army. There seems little hope that it wont overwhelm them completely and destroy them without a trace. Only through an ancient prophecy can they be saved. Hakeem, an Elvish Princess and their adopted daughter join to flee assassins and begin the search for a way to save the Elves. Readers Favorites Reviews: “Historical fantasy really doesn't get better than this” “first-rate … truly memorable” "A brilliant job of writing ... merges elves into Greek mythology and creates strong and fascinating characters. Rating: 5.0 stars

Knight Watch

ISBN: 1625797931
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 371
Book Description
MEN IN BLACK AT THE REN FAIRE! John Rast went to the Ren Faire looking for a fight. Well, a simulated fight, with blunt swords and safety equipment. But when his final opponent turns into a living, fire-breathing dragon, John finds himself in the fight of his life. It’s John or nothing stopping a disaster in its tracks—and the only real weapon at hand is his mom’s Volvo. So John decides to let it roll . . . And that's when destiny comes to call. John is spirited away to the well-hidden base of Knight Watch, the organization that stands between humanity and the real nasties the rest of the world doesn’t know about. Knight Watch would be John’s dream job—except for the storm goddess that destroys his parents’ house, the abandoned mall replete with too much dead, and the Fetch that aims to make John’s domain a final resting place. All this has John’s putative allies in the Knight Watch worried that John is the one bringing bad things into multiple worlds. John and his reluctant teammates have to figure out who, or what, is pulling the strings before all of Knight Watch falls prey to a well-concealed puppetmaster and far worse things enter this world. About Knight's Watch: “Buckle up and get ready for a fun ride. Tim Akers delivers an epic story about weekend ren fair warriors versus actual monsters. Best fictional use of a Volvo station wagon ever.”—Larry Correia About Tim Akers: “A must for all epic fantasy fans.”—Starburst “Full of strong world building, cinematic and frequent battle scenes, high adventure, great characters, suspense, and dramatic plot shifts, this is an engaging, fast-paced entry in a popular subgenre."—Booklist (starred review) “Take a bit of fantasy, mix in the horror of the demonic, and put in some top-notch writing and you’ll have Akers’ latest novel.”—Hellnotes “Fast-paced . . . an epic fantasy story with action, intrigue and a good story.” —RPG “Delivers enough twists and surprises to keep readers fascinated...contains action, grittiness, magic, intrigue and well created characters.”—Rising Shadow “An extremely well-developed secondary world.”—SF Signal
