Charles Foster Kent was born at Palmyra, New York, and educated at Yale (A.B., 1889; Ph.D., 1891). He studied at the University of Berlin (1891-92). He was an instructor at the University of Chicago 1893-95 and then professor of Biblical literature at Brown. After 1901, he was Woolsey Professor of Biblical Literature at Yale. In 1922, he helped found the National Council of Schools of Religion, an organization that would two years later become the National Council on Religion in Higher Education, which through conference sponsorship and its Kent Fellows scholarship program played a significant role in church-university activities. In the early 1960's it merged with the Danforth fellows program and became the Society for Religion in Higher Education. In 1975 it was renamed the Society for Values in Higher Education. The Origin and Permanent Value of the Old Testament is one of Kent's most poignant works and a great addition to any Christian Library. Cover photography by Paul Spremulli.

Excerpt from The Divine Library of the Old Testament: Its Origin, Preservation, Inspiration, and Permanent Value; Five Lectures Of the Lectures contained in this volume four were delivered in the Cathedral of St. Asaph, at the invitation of the Dean and Chapter, to a gathering of clergy and laity from different parts of the Diocese, in Whitsun week of 1891. The third Lecture is one of a course given at Ely in 1885, with reference to the appearance of the Revised Version of the Old Testament. I have added it here, as I had originally intended to include the subject of the Preservation of the Old Testament in the course of Lectures at St. Asaph, and it forms a natural sequel to the two Lectures on the Origin of the Old Testament. The Lectures are now published in accordance with a wish expressed by some of those who heard them at St. Asaph, and in the hope that they may be a contribution, however humble, towards the propagation, I will not say of right opinion, but of a right temper and attitude, with reference to the questions which are exercising the mind of the Church at the present time with regard to the Old Testament. Excerpt from The Gospel in the Old Testament The events of the past six years have served to bring into clearer relief the permanent religious value of much of the Old Testament teaching, and many of the sermons stand in relation to burning questions which were directly raised by the war, and form as it were landmarks of stages in the crisis through which we have passed. These have been allowed to remain as they were written, on the view that their applica tion to the special circumstances of the moment would illustrate the more clearly the abiding moral and spiritual importance of the Old Testament. Their grouping under this aspect may be gathered from the dates which are given in the Table of Contents.
