It has become apparent that Northern Ireland feels left behind in UK broadcasting terms. Levels of production are comparatively low. Northern Ireland producers find it difficult to win commissions from the UK's major broadcast organisations. Digital switchover, already under way in some parts of the UK will not occur in Northern Ireland until 2012. Nor, since UTV remains strong enough to provide news in competition with the BBC, will Northern Ireland benefit from public money proposed for new independently funded news consortia. The evidence the Committee received confirms and demonstrates that Northern Ireland is the least well served of the UK's four nations in terms of network production that reflects and portrays its life and in the amount of network programming produced there. The Committee makes a number of recommendations to remedy this.

Writing Resistance in Northern Ireland is an examination of feminist republicanism(s) in the north of Ireland between 1975 and 1986. Republican prison protest was rife during this period, and fractures opened up between the feminist and republican movements. Despite their shared objective of self-determination, the two movements did not achieve a natural or total congruence. While it has been argued that there is a disjuncture between feminism and nationalism, this book argues for a new perspective on feminist republicanism(s) in the north and tells the story of a niche collective of republican feminists who came to the fore during the Troubles and sought bodily, political and economic autonomy. The book examines source material including historical narratives, jail-writings, journalism, documentary film and literary texts, and paints a vivid picture of a movement of republican feminist women’s writing concerned with political crisis, gender and the nation. Aimée Walsh uses the plural ‘republicanism(s)’ as a way of encapsulating the varied iterations of nationalist feminism, from militant republicanism in Armagh Gaol to a non-violent literary nationalist feminism. This examination of the interaction between nationalism and gender shows how the study of women’s writing can offer a paradigm shift in the history of the Troubles as seen through a feminist lens.

As the United Kingdom continues to grapple with the aftermath of Brexit, one corner of the Union has remained caught in the crosshairs. Northern Ireland has been the subject of renewed scrutiny since 2016, as efforts to leave the European Union come up against the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and threaten the region’s hard-won peace. The reasons for these challenges can be traced back to the Agreement itself, as the negotiated settlement and its immediate aftermath set in place a strained peace. This book examines the function – and dysfunction – of peace after 1998 to explain why its endurance cannot be taken for granted. Strained peace stands apart from the traditional peace/violence binary. Structures of conflict and patterns of division are reiterated in the structures of peace. Tensions might relax just as they might be inflamed by new challenges, but the threat of a return to violence is never fully gone. This book explores how such a condition developed between Good Friday and Brexit, addressing variations in the quality of peace in the insecurity of official structures at Stormont, the shifting role of community groups and the third sector, and the adaptation of culture as a “culture war” replaced physical violence on the streets.
