Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 48 But no part Of his early studies was so advantageous to him, as the long series Of diligent researches, which he carried on upon the Site of the principal Cities of Ancient Italy fre quently directing in person the excavations from which his materials were to be derived, and pursuing with his own eyes the numerous topographical investigations, the neglect of which had hitherto formed one of the Chief obstacles to a Satisfactory history of that remote period. An attentive Study of numismatics strengthened and confirmed the views, which these preparatory researches had suggested and, when he first put his hand to the composition of his history of Italy before the Roman Conquest, there was hardly a spot of the peninsula which he had not visited, or an important monu ment which he had not examined. This work was published in Florence, in 1810, in four volumes octavo, together with a folio Atlas, containing sixty plates, illustrative of the manners and customs of the ancient Italians. Its object was as important as its plan was new. Ancient Italy had till then been the subject of puerile fables, or of researches purely antiquarian. Micali was the first who ventured to engage in the bold and hazardous task of separating the false from the true, in the fragments which have come down to us Of the old writers, and of restoring the history of this primitive civilization, by drawing from its numerous monuments their varied and enigmatic records. His work was divided into two parts. The first is devoted to a descriptive examination of the original divisions and Of the primitive inhabitants of the country. The second is a narrative of their revolutions and of the various incidents of their history. The History of Italy before the Roman Conquest, preceded the Roman History of Niebuhr, and, if we may be allowed to judge by the rank which these two celebrated works seem now to have permanently taken, has survived it. Niebuhr himself, who had attacked many of the positions of Micali in his first edition refracted his accusations in the last. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 7: And Miscellaneous Journal To discover what beauty is, and in what manner it affects us, has long been a favourite object of speculative curiosity. The learned have pursued this inquiry with ardour, from its apparently intimate connexion with some of the most interesting truths of intellectual philosophy; and many of the higher order of artists have been led to anticipate, from the success of their researches, an almost infinite improvement of their powers to please. But no such improvement seems likely to result from these speculations. For him, who would paint a fine picture, it may be about as useful to inquire into the nature of beauty, as for one, who would acquaint himself with history, to penetrate into the nature of truth, or for one, who would feel the force of a mathematical demonstration, to develop the fundamental principles of human belief. In this, as in most other subjects, men have commenced with what is difficult and remote, and afterwards proceeded to what is intelligible and familiar, - have loved to systematize and speculate, rather than to examine and compare. But however misguided and unsuccessful these researches, in general, may have been, they are neither useless nor uninteresting. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 28 We remember Mr Hunt as the author of the Feast of the Poets, a gay and pleasing little poem; of Foliage, which faded with considerably more expedition, than if it had been natural; and of Rimini, a work not deficient in talent, but written expressly to recommend a remarkable dialect, which he chose to denominate the poetical language, because, as it appeared, it was such as never had been heard of in the intercourse of men. In the Dedication of the last of these works to Lord Byron, the author spoke much of his fellow-dignity, a phrase which we do not profess to comprehend, but which seems to have given umbrage to his lordship; whose dissatisfaction was expressed in a manner, which evidently had its influence in changing this fellow-dignity into indignation. Nothing we had known of Mr Hunt inspired us with any enthusiastic desire to meet him again, though we could not have expected from his good-natured absurdity, a work like the one before us. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 168 It is only four years since Japan defeated China and had, ceded to it a portion of Chinese territory, the fruits of victory. Then appeared upon the scene a combination owrance, Russia and Germany, whieh drove Japan out of China. Russia took part of the spoils for herself, and Germany later took territory near by. Japan got nothing. Britain, the most powerful of all, stood by neutral. Had she decided to defend Japan, the greatest war ever known would have been the probable result. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 58 Although we deem Mr. Griswold deserving of a little gen tle correction for his literary beneficence, we are not insen sible to his merits. The work before us must have demanded the labor of years. Those portions which are intrinsically the least valuable undoubtedly cost the editor the most toil, and afforded him the least gratification. To hunt out medi ocrity and feebleness, and append correct dates to their for gotten effusions, is ah exercise of philanthropy which is likely to be little appreciated and yet, in many instances, it was necessary, in order to give a fair reflection of the poet ical Spirit of the country and the time. In the editors Swan derings in some of the secluded lanes of letters, he has res cued from Oblivion many poems of considerable value. He has been compelled to search for most of his facts in places only accessible by great exertion and perseverance. Many of the poets from whom he has made selections have never published editions of their writings, and had never before been honored with biographies. He might easily have writ ten better poems than some which he must have expend ed much time and labor in obtaining. The vanities and jealousies Of his band of authors he was compelled to take into consideration, and to forbear giving them unnecessary offence. Among all the fierce enmities which a person may provoke by sincerely expressing his opinions, we know of none more dangerous than that which follows from inform ing a rhyming scribbler, that his fame Will not equal his am bition, or from omitting to notice him at all out of com miseration for his well-meaning stupidities. We think, therefore, that Mr. Griswold has succeeded as well in his book', as the nature of the case admitted that his patient research and general correctness of taste are worthy of praise that his difficulties and temptations would have ex tenuated far graver errors than he has committed, and that his volume well deserves the approbation it has received. Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 93 Whether we contemplate this mighty domain from the stu dent's closet or from some horizon-bounded expanse amid its solitudes, its grandeur is not overwhelming; for as the poet describes the mind as grown colossal by the majesty, power, and beauty of St. Peter's, so does it Cxpand at the contempla tion of this imperial wilderness, and of the Providence which destines it for the abode of civilization. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 144 The next generation will find it hard to believe that of the four men living at the outbreak of the war who had occupied the presidential chair not one tendered his support to the National cause, or offered sympathy or patriotic counsel to his overburdened successor at the head of the Government. It will be deemed almost incredible that during the whole four years of that terrible struggle not one of these men, all of whom were citizens of Northern States, made any public utterance intended to strengthen the Union cause or indeed any utterance at all upon the subject, except in one case, when compelled by public clamor to make a lame excuse for his own apathy. Already it is hard to realize that when the conflict drew to its close one of these men refused to decorate his house in honor of our final tri-victory, or display the emblems of mourning on the death of the great leader whose marvelous tact and unfailing steadfastness had brought us through those years of unmatched peril. Still more difficult will it be for posterity to understand that our ex-Presidents were simply types of a very large element of our people. These very naturally desired the war, its causes and overshadowing glories to be forgotten just as soon as possible. They made haste, therefore, to turn the public attention into other channels and to clamor for oblivion in regard to the past. There was another and most peculiar influence tending in this direction. The political organization then having control of the country had in it two elements which looked with especial disfavor on the ascendency within itself of those whose fame rested on military renown. One of these was what was known as the "Abolition Element." These men regarded themselves as, in a sense, the possessors of an exclusive proprietary interest in the Republican party of that day, and thought that the laurels of its first administration, both civic and military, ought to relate back to them as the ultimate cause, rather than rest upon the heads of the immediate agents. Such men as Chase, Sumner, Seward, Greeley, and a host of lesser lights, felt deeply aggrieved at being overshadowed by men like Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Stanton, and other military leaders whom they regarded, if not us trespassers on their demesne, at least as men who had merely adopted their ideas and reaped advantage from their labors. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 279: February, 1880 Presidential office after their second term, has become, by universal concur rence, a part of our republican system of government, and that any departure from this time-honored custom would be unwise, unpatriotic, and fraught with peril to our free institutions. The rules of the House were suspended, and the resolution passed on the very day of its introduction. No less than two hun dred and thirty-three votes were recorded in its favor. Only eigh teen members voted against it. That reiterated vociferation accomplished the purpose for which it was designed. It defeated the renomination of General Grant in 1876.
