New fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales will come into force on 1 October 2006, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (S.I. 2005/1541, ISBN 0110729455). This is one of a series of 11 publications which set out recommendations and guidance for employers, managers, occupiers and owners of particular types of premises on how to carry out a fire risk assessment and how to identify general fire precautions required (including fire detection and warning systems, firefighting equipment, escape routes, signs and training). This guide covers all premises where the main use is to provide sleeping accommodation, including hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast accommodation, hostels, residential training centres, holiday accommodation and the common areas of flats, maisonettes, houses in multiple occupation,and sheltered housing (other than those providing care). It does not cover domestic premises occupied as a single private dwelling, hospitals, residential care and nursing homes, prisons and other establishments where people are in lawful custody.
