Certain clarifications of the original spelling have been found necessary, also considerable cutting to eliminate figures only understandable in the light of mediaeval theology. In performances these plays require the simplest technique and the rigid avoidance of any stage effects whatsoever. In the Greenwich Village Theatre festival productions the stage is set to suggest a church chancel. At the back is a tall stained glass window and in front of it an altar with candelabra and a bowl of lilies. The shepherds enter and sit upon the dais in front of the altar. The curtain is up at the beginning and is not lowered during the performance. In the places required in the plays and in the intervals between the plays there is plain-song for choir and organ.
