Book Description
In the years following Japan's long period of self-imposed isolation from the world, Japan developed a new relationship with the West, and especially with Britain, where relations grew to be particularly close. The Japanese, embarrassed by their perceived comparative backwardness, looked to the West to learn modern industrial techniques, including the design and engineering skills which underpinned them. At the same time, taking great pride in their own culture, they exhibited and sold high quality products of traditional Japanese craftsmanship in the West, stimulating a thirst for, and appreciation of, Japanese arts and crafts. This book examines the two-way bridge-building cultural exchange which took place between Japan and Britain in the years after 1859 and into the early years of the twentieth century. Topics covered include architecture, industrial design, prints, painting and photographs, together with a consideration of Japanese government policy, the Japan-Britain Exhibition of 1910, and commercial spin-offs. In addition, there are case studies of key individuals who were particularly influential in fostering British-Japanese cultural bridges in this period.

Japanese Cloisonne
Author: Gregory Irvine
Publisher: Victoria & Albert Museum
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
"The production of Japanese cloisonne enamels had, by the end of the 19th century, become one of the country's most successful forms of manufacture and export. Using examples drawn from two collections, this book examines the techniques and social history behind the craft." "As well as being a showcase for beautiful examples of cloisonne work, this book shows how the interaction between East and West played a key role in production. The craft of cloisonne enamelling grew from long established traditions of Japanese metalwork but was expanded further with the help of western technical expertise and demand was stimulated by the strong export market. It has been the continuing popularity and appreciation of the craft in the west that has lead to its re-evaluation in Japan and the increasing acknowledgement of its importance for understanding Japan's artistic traditions." "This book will serve as an introduction to the full range of Japanese cloisonne enamels, as well as revealing to collectors and scholars treasures from two outstanding collections."--BOOK JACKET.

Enamels of the World, 1700-2000
Author: Haydn Williams
Publisher: Khalili Collections
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 460
Book Description
'Enamels of the World 1700-2000', consisting of some twelve hundred works, is the largest and most comprehensive private collection known. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the richness and diversity of the art of enamelling during the past three centuries, ranging from the imposing work of Qing dynasty China and Meiji Japan, to the magnificent creations of Romanov Russia and the royal courts of Europe and the East. Formed with the innovative criterion of considering the subject in a globally, it covers work from all major centres of production, allowing the enamelwork of a specific country to be viewed within its own context and as part of a wider history. This volume presents over three hundred pieces from the collection. The survey starts with an account of the evolution and refinement of the different enamelling techniques. Thereafter it studies the subject thematically, considering the impact of patronage and travel, as well as the role of nationalism in the development of historical revivalism. The enamelwork of China, Japan, the Islamic Lands and Europe are examined both in terms of local development and the assimilation of foreign influence. The history of three firms is reviewed in greater focus - Jean George Rémond, Fabergé and Cartier. Representing different periods within three hundred years covered by the collection, the character of these firms, though largely shaped by the genius of their directors, was also formed by the era in which they flourished. Whether looking at the subject in general or in detail, the reader is presented with an illuminating display of the great technical skill and creative ingenuity of the enamellers of the world. The volume is accompanied by a CD that presents the Khalili Collection of 'Enamels of the World 1700-2000' in its entirety.
