Book Description
Excerpt from The New-York Monthly Chronicle of Medicine and Surgery, 1825, Vol. 1 In the literary intercourse of medical brethren, be the countries in which they reside ever so remote, there appears to be the least provocation to the indulgence of such illiberal policy, and of the feelings which naturally flow from it. Not connected, as the members of other professions in most countries are, with the government or the politics of the state, physicians have the widest field Opened for the cultivation of those magna ulmous international feelings which devotion to the same pur suits is so admirably calculated to engender, and which habits formed and cherished by familiarity with the sciences are so likely to cement and render indissoluble. Not illustrated. 1842 edition. Excerpt: ...on entering the house of worship of the first Baptist church, that a little more than fifteen years since, we attended and assisted at the opening of that house, and the settlement of their first pastor. The church at that time numbered less than one hundred members. Now they have become three bands, and the entire number of communicants is not less than eighteen or nineteen hundred, one-quarter of which number have recently been received by baptism. With the respected pastors of the first and second Baptist churches we had enjoyed a pleasant and endeared relation, while they were in their preparatory studies for the ministry; and it was therefore the more delightful to visit them now, and witness the abundant favoi with which the Most High has crowned their labors. All that we saw and heard, left on our mind the deep impression that God is in" the midst of the assemblies of his people, and that great grace is upon them all. If we understood correctly, the revival had been in progress for some time in the second church; but its commencement in both the others, and its wide extension throughout almost every evangelical society in the city, was obviously referable to the labors of Rev. Mr. Knapp, who, for five weeks in succession, held forth the word of life with power, in all the Baptist pulpits, and in some others. We were present at a third service on Lord's day evening in the third Baptist church, where the evidences of the power of the Spirit are perhaps more recent, and at this time more strong, than in either of the others. Long may such scenes, over which angels rejoice, continue to be witnessed there! Monday evening last, the spacious Baptist church on "Bowdoin Square" (as a little triangular space of noisy pavement, ...

Book Description
Biographies of more than 100 Irish scientists (or those with strong Irish connections), in the disciplines of Chemistry and Physics, including Astronomy, Mathematics etc., describing them in their Irish and international scientific, social, educational and political context. Written in an attractive informal style for the hypothetical 'educated layman' who does not need to have studied science. Well received in Irish and international reviews.
