Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Marriage Market Enlightened time. If any pride can be taken in the fact, let those who will be proud. For never in all the passing pageant and phantasmagoria of history did a greater generation of civilised hypocrites cumber the face of the globe than cumber it to-day, - never was the earth so oppressed with the weight of polite lying, -never were there such crowds of civil masqueraders, cultured tricksters, and social humbugs, who, though admirable as tricksters and humbugs, are wholly contemptible as men and women. Truth is at a discount, - and if one should utter it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Step into the intriguing world of Victorian society with Marie Corelli's captivating novel, "The Modern Marriage Market." Set against the backdrop of London's bustling streets and opulent drawing rooms, this gripping tale offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of those navigating the precarious terrain of love, ambition, and societal expectations. At the center of the narrative is the spirited and unconventional heroine, whose journey takes her from the stifling confines of traditional gender roles to the exhilarating possibilities of self-discovery and independence. As she grapples with the pressures of conformity and the allure of forbidden romance, she must navigate a labyrinth of social conventions and personal desires to forge her own path in a world dominated by patriarchal norms. With Corelli's signature blend of romance, intrigue, and social commentary, "The Modern Marriage Market" exposes the complexities of Victorian society, where love and marriage are often commodified and negotiated like business transactions. Through vivid prose and vivid characters, Corelli invites readers to explore the inner workings of the marriage market, where fortunes are won and lost, and hearts are both broken and redeemed. More than a mere romance, "The Modern Marriage Market" is a compelling portrait of a bygone era, where passion and propriety collide amidst the glittering facade of high society. Whether you're a fan of historical fiction or simply crave a captivating story that transcends time, Corelli's masterful storytelling will transport you to a world of intrigue, passion, and forbidden love. Prepare to be swept away by "The Modern Marriage Market," where the pursuit of love and happiness knows no bounds.

Book Description
Marriage and social inequality are closely interrelated. Marriage is dependent on the structure of marriage markets, and marriage patterns have consequences for social inequality. This book demonstrates that in most modern societies the educa tional system has become an increasingly important marriage market, particularly for those who are highly qualified. Educational expansion in general and the rising educational participation of women in particular unintentionally have increased the rate of "assortative meeting" and assortative mating across birth cohorts. Rising educational homogamy means that social inequality is further enhanced through marriage because better (and worse) educated single men and women pool their economic and sociocultural advantages (and disadvantages) within couples. In this book we study the changing role of the educational system as a marriage market in modern societies from a cross-national comparative perspective. Using life-history data from a broad range of industrialized countries and longitudinal statistical models, we analyze the process of spouse selection in the life courses of single men and women, step by step. The countries included in this book vary widely in important characteristics such as demographic behavior and institutional characteristics. The life course approach explicitly recognizes the dynamic nature of partner decisions, the importance of educational roles and institutional circum stances as young men and women move through their life paths, and the cumulation of advantages and disadvantages experienced by individuals.
