Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Light-House Service During the preparation of this work I consulted and drew more or less freely upon my previous professional papers, published in Appleton's Annual Cyclopedias, and in the Popular Science Monthly, for which due credit is given in the text. Findlay's light-houses of the World, the Ad miralty Lists, and the Sailing Directions issued bv the Navy Department furnished me with the statements as to light-houses of the various nation alities. The account of the light-dues charged by other countries than Great Britain and the United Statrs is based upon the pages of Urqu hart's Dues and Charges on Shipping in Foreign Parts and the book on Port Charges of the World, by Messrs. Hunter and Patten. The Hydrog rapher of the Navy and the naval officers under him have placed me under many obligations, as have the officers of the Department of State and the Bureau of Navigation of the Treasury Department, and I have availed myself of Heap's Ancient and Modern light-houses, Barnard on light-houses, and the published reports of the light-house Board. But with all this help I should not have been able to finish this paper in the short time allowed me but for the intelligent assistance of Mr. E. S. How, of this office. The labor could only be performed at night, after the current work of the dav had been accomplished, and there has been little opportunity for revision. This is ever a keynote in the following pages, even in the discussion of details. It has been the intention to establish an intimacy with lighting efiects, Whether dealing with general principles or with specific problems. The former are dealt with in the early chapters and the latter in the next group. Attention is confined primarily to dis tribution of light until the closing chapters are reached. These provide glimpses into the depths where color accumulated its powers. In the final chapter the production and use of colored light are discussed with the hope that the householder will be aided in introducing some of the charm of color into lighting. An important collection of seminal writings on a movement that is rapidly changing the face of American politics, The Libertarian Reader links some of the most fertile minds of our time to a centuries-old commitment to freedom, self-determination, and opposition to intrusive government. This is the first comprehensive anthology of libertarian thought—from the Bible and Lao-Tzu to Hayek and Milton Friedman—to be published in one volume. The 68 selections from great libertarian writers are an intellectual feast, covering such key libertarian themes as skepticism about power, individual rights, spontaneous order, free markets, and peace. For all independent thinkers, this unique sourcebook will stand as a classic reference for years to come, and a reminder that libertarianism is one of our oldest and most venerable American traditions.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Lighthouse Work of Sir James Chance, Baronet The monumental invention of Fresnel was, after his too early death in 1827, perfected, or rather extended, by his brother Leonor, by Degrand, Allard, Bourdelles, and others in France, and in Britain by the distinguished family of Stevenson (robert, Alan, and Thomas), by Brewster, Airy, Faraday, Thomson, Tyndall, and Hopkinson, and by the subject of the present memoir, who worked in collaboration with some of these, or alone, devoting during many years his high mathematical abilities to the optical side of the task, and his practical sagacity to the whole. The annals of the Trinity House, of the Board of Trade, and of the Admiralty, abundantly record the advisory work of James Timmins Chance, and show how his name is written on many leading lighthouses of his generation. Mention need hardly be made here of the particular ones to which he devoted his talents and his time; yet such lights as those of Great Orme's Head, Europa Point, Wolf Rock, Flamborough Head, Souter Point, and the South Foreland ought to be distinctly remembered. In connection with the work of the latest Royal Commission on Lights, Buoys, and Beacons, his name is not less distinguished than those of Airy and Faraday, as will be seen in the pages that follow. His papers on lighthouse illumination, communi cated to the Institution of Civil Engineers, remain valuable text-books.
