Book Description
Excerpt from The Mirror, 1912 It is not all of success to resolve to be great. Greatness in character does not mean the evolution of some ponderous personality, which, like a massive piece of furniture, is out of all proportion to its setting, but a character which fully fills the niche it occupies, and from its station dispenses the bless ings of high thinking and right doing. Greatness is the outgrowth of service to others. Not only is it impossible for one to resolve himself great, but though he lavish upon himself every effort of an earnest life, he will be as an inexperienced and untrained gawk, in comparison to him who has grown great in the service of his fellow. If every man who aspires to be great or resolves to be great should, without further ado, desert his habitual en virons and ock to the door of place and power, he might knock till his knuckles were sore without gain ing entrance, but what man who by toil and study has adequately prepared himself for useful service does not find himself already in the room of place and power? Book Description
Excerpt from The Mirror, Vol. 7: June, 1912 Another result of good reading is the ability to discuss interesting subjects in an interesting manner and with enjoyment. A mutual enjoyment of books immediately gives a common bond of interest. Through another's eyes, we see the book in new light. If it is worth while, there are usually social conditions, characters or historical events to talk over. By this means, we gain a new insight into life and broaden our interests. No one is pleasanter to meet than the person who has read books on varied subjects and who enjoys talking about them. Then, too, historical novels are good sources from which to get the history of the times about which they are written, in a pleasant way. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mirror, 1930 As the day comes nearer, so does the end of the grind of studies. But with it also comes the end of the many joys and pleasures connected with high school life. For, despite our growlings and groanings over studies, most of us will admit that our high school career has been one of joy and amusements, and many will leave, sadly realizing that they may never again participate in foot ball, baseball, dramatics, or whatever their own special hobby may have been that they may be losing forever the delightful companionships formed. Some of those who go to work will rejoice in it, while others will gaze with envy upon those privileged ones who are to enter college in the fall. Some of those going to college will be eu tirely free of worry about finances and scholarship; others will have to struggle perpetually for what they desire. And there will be those whose greatest wish is to go fur ther with their education but who are unable to do so, who will feel completely lost, wondering fearfully what the future may hold for them. All these individuals are compounded in a Senior Class, and few can truthfully say that their three years in high school have been unpleasant or that they are unable to understand the hackneyed phrase of parents, I wish I were in your place! Book Description
Excerpt from The Mirror, 1934 But we would not fall into the common and Vicious error of evaluating a coach's merit by the number of victories his teams have won. The national and international recognition that Professor Quimby has received is by no means a truer measure of his worth than is the personal esteem in which he is held by those with whom he has worked. The affection they feel for him is of a deep and undefinable nature, an affection such as students can feel only for those instructors who bring out the best that is in them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mirror, 1937 It is possible, though hardly probable, that a year book may become an art form. Perhaps when editors are granted the privilege of being true to their own insights into college life, a year - book may some day exalt with restrained enthusiasm the ideal of intellectual honesty and creativity that forever lies just over the hori zon of every college hill. Within these pages we only hope to focus the vision of thinking men to a Bates enlightened by wise teachers, vigorous in its play spirit, severe in its mental discipline, yet patient and encouraging to its failures. Ive hope, perhaps, to suggest an alternative to any drastic change in curriculum that mav result in an effort to meet the occasional decrease in seasonal enrollment. In the very simple arrangement of this book we express our faith that Bates can represent, if it will, the interests of a lower-middle class group in creative scholarship, original thinking, and constructive service in the world of men. Let us remember both our virtues and our faults. Fortunate are we in a campus cleared by clean winds and lying close to hills and meadowlands and coun try-roads where men may walk with silence and their own thoughts. Fe'have challenged our professors to define an ideally educated man; our returns have been surprising both in numbers and in singleness of high purpose. 'vhen these men are willing to submerge personal differences and departmental jealousies into a larger good that encourages and serves the intellectual curiosity of their students, Bates may well become a center where students are attracted by the light as well as the sweetness of its professors. Ultimately how far up the ladder of light Bates may climb rests with the enthusiasm and scholarship of its undergraduate body. It was not without wisdom that a Garnet writer could suggest: Bates may well raise its C standards, eliminate the unfit ruth lessly, and encourage the young man and woman who is so radical as to believe that a college should organize itself around the studies.
