Book Description
Metals reinforced with ceramic fibers or particulates are promising materials for use in new generations of aerospace structures, propulsion devices and energy conversion systems. Furthermore, the controllability of many of these variables opens up the possibility of engineering materials for specific applications, if the effects of alterations in microstructure can be predicted. However, metal-matrix composites often have low ductility and low fracture toughness. An improved understanding of the basic deformation and failure mechanisms is needed to overcome these problems. To this end, research was carried out in three areas: (1) continuum modeling of deformation and fracture in metal-matrix composites, including the interaction between failure mechanisms using phenomenological constitutive relations to characterize each of the main failure modes in metal-matrix composites, reinforcement cracking, interfacial debonding and matrix void nucleation, growth and coalescence; (2) numerical studies of the propagation of fast cracks along and across interfaces, with a particular focus on understanding crack propagation from a brittle phase into a ductile phase; and (3) discrete dislocation modeling of matrix plastic deformation in metal-matrix composites with micron size reinforcements.

Book Description
This book contains fifteen papers based on the presentations made at the symposium on "Inelasticity and Micromechanics of Metal Matrix Composites" held at the University of Washington, USA, in mid-1994. The papers represent the most recent work conducted on inelasticity and micromechanics of metal matrix composites. The book is divided into two parts: Part I deals with the study of inelastic deformation in metal matrix composites, while Part II tackles the micromechanical aspects of metal matrix composites. The articles discuss different aspects of these two topics ranging from purely theoretical treatments to extensive experimental investigations. Many of the papers are by prominent researchers working in this area.

Book Description
The strength of metallic materials determines the usability and reliability of all the machines, tools and equipment around us. Yet, the question about which mechanisms control the strength and damage resistance of materials and how they can be optimised remains largely unanswered. How do real, heterogeneous ma- rials deform and fail? Why can a small modification of the microstructure increase the strength and damage resistance of materials manifold? How can the strength of heterogeneous materials be predicted? The purpose of this book is to present different experimental and computational analysis methods of micromechanics of damage and strength of materials and to demonstrate their applications to various micromechanical problems. This book summarizes at a glance some of the publications of the Computational Mechanics Group at the IMWF/MPA Stuttgart, dealing with atomistic, micro- and meso- chanical modelling and experimental analysis of strength and damage of metallic materials. In chapter 1, the micromechanisms of damage and fracture in different groups of materials are investigated experimentally, using direct observations and inverse analysis. The interaction of microstructural elements with the evolving damage is studied in these experiments. Chapter 2 presents different approaches to the - cromechanical simulation of composite materials: embedded unit cells, multiphase finite elements and multiparticle unit cells. Examples of the application of these models to the analysis of deformation and damage in different materials are given. Chapter 3 deals with the methods of numerical modelling of damage evolution and crack growth in heterogeneous materials.

Book Description
Under the support of ARO (Grant number: DAAH04-94-G-0086, Solid Mechanics Program, Program Director, Dr. K. Iyer), a three-year basic research program is carried out on the micromechanics of high strain-rate deformation and failure in dual-phase composites. Three composite material systems are studied: (1) tungsten heavy alloys and tungsten-based composites; (2) ceramic particle reinforced metal matrix composites; and (3) penetrator/armor material combinations. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between the microstructure and material behavior of the dual-phase solids, aiming to provide guidelines for the design of advanced armor/antiarmor systems. The outcomes of this three-year program include: (1) A better understanding of the fundamental relationship between the high strain rate behaviors and material microstructures of metal alloys and composite materials in advanced penetrator/armor systems. (2) Formulae and design charts that quantify the effects of relative volume fractions, strain and strain rate hardening, thermal softening, and the amount of damage on the overall behavior of the dual-phase solids. (3) Micromechanical models and computational schemes that can be used to predict the dynamic behavior of the penetrator and armor materials; these models and schemes may provide a basis to link the material microstructures to ballistic performance.

Book Description
Mechanical properties of composite materials can be improved by tailoring their microstructures. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.

Book Description
This book provides in a single and unified volume a clear and thorough presentation of the recent advances in continuum damage mechanics for metals and metal matrix composites. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical formulation of the different constitutive models in this area, but sections are added to demonstrate the applications of the theory. In addition, some sections contain new material that has not appeared before in the literature. The book is divided into three major parts: Part I deals with the scalar formulation and is limited to the analysis of isotropic damage in materials; Parts II and III deal with the tensor formulation and is applied to general states of deformation and damage. The material appearing in this text is limited to plastic deformation and damage in ductile materials (e.g. metals and metal matrix composites) but excludes many of the recent advances made in creep, brittle fracture, and temperature effects since the authors feel that these topics require a separate volume for this presentation. Furthermore, the applications presented in this book are the simplest possible ones and are mainly based on the uniaxial tension test.
