Book Description
Fairacres Publication 26 PROKHOR MOCHNIN, later to be known as St Seraphim of Sarov, was born in July 1759 in Kursk on the northernmost Russian steppes. At nineteen, he entered a remote monastery in a forest in Sarov in central Russia, where he received the name Seraphim (Hebrew: ‘flaming’) and became a priest. He later lived as a hermit in a simple cabin in the woods, where he kept strict silence. He eventually returned to his monastery, where he shut himself in his cell for five years. After he had emerged, people flocked to see this staretz, who radiated the fruits of the Spirit. His dictum, ‘have peace in your heart, and thousands around you will be saved’ is well-known throughout the Christian world. He taught that the aim of Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, and that prayer, more than anything else, gives the grace of the Holy Spirit. This small book concentrates upon a record made by Nicolas Motovilov of a conversation with St Seraphim in 1831, soon after Seraphim had healed him of paralysis. The record was discovered in 1902 by Serge Nilus at the convent of Diveyevo and he had it published in the Moscow Journal of July 1903, the same month in which Seraphim was canonized. IRINA GORAINOV lived for some years on the island of Patmos. Her writing is based upon both knowledge of the written sources about St Seraphim and upon personal acquaintance with people living in the same tradition of prayer and faith.

God's Revelation to the Human Heart
Author: Seraphim Rose
Publisher: Saint Herman Press
ISBN: 9780938635031
Category : Spiritual life
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
What does man seek in religion, and what should he seek in it? How does God reveal Himself in order to bring man to a knowledge of the Truth? How does suffering help this revelation to occur? These and other questions were discussed by Fr. Seraphim Rose, an Orthodox Christian monk from the mountains of northern California, during a lecture he gave at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1981. The contents of this lecture comprise God's Revelation to the Human Heart. Drawing from a variety of sources -- the Holy Scriptures, patristic writings, the lives of both ancient and modern saints, and accounts of persecuted Christians behind the Iron Curtain -- Fr. Seraphim goes to the core of all Christian life: the conversion of the heart of man, which causes it to bum with love for Christ and transforms one into a new being.

The Ethics of Beauty
Author: Timothy G. Patitsas
Publisher: St. Nicholas Press
ISBN: 9781635511000
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 748
Book Description
Chaste and ardent eros for the Beautiful is the first task of human life, and falling in love with Beauty is the beginning of every adventure that matters...The original task of Ethics was to guide us to the most just and meaningful life possible. Today, ethicists define their discipline more narrowly as "the rational investigation of morality." This reduces Ethics to an examination of the Good by the True, tacitly suppressing the deep human need for the Beautiful. In The Ethics of Beauty, Orthodox Christian theologian Timothy Patitsas first considers Beauty's opposite, the dark events that traumatize victims of war and other ugly circumstances, and then invites us to rediscover the older Beauty-first approach to moral reasoning and the integrity of the soul.Covering topics ranging from creation to political theory to the Jesus Prayer, including war, psychology, trauma, chastity, healthy shame, gender, marriage, hospitality, art, architecture, theology, economics, urban planning, and complexity theory, The Ethics of Beauty lays out a worldview in which Beauty, Goodness, and Truth are recognized as indispensable elements of the best possible human life.
