Book Description
Excerpt from The Men Who Make Our Novels All books should have a preface, to tell what they are about and why they were written, says Mr. Arthur Bullard, in the opening sentence of his first novel, A Man's World; continuing, This book is about myself. As is usual with books and prefaces alike, since no man can escape the prison of his personality to view the world with any eyes but his own; we cannot, like that Tiresias cited by Monsieur France, be men and at the same time have memories of having been women. The present volume, presumably dealing with cer tain of those who make novels, was written on de mand, and is, for the most part, concerned with the life and opinions of George Gordon. For this reason, despite Mr. Bullard's frank invitation, I am loathe to add (to so much) a preface on him. Rather am I of the opinion of the author who demurred when the first John Murray demanded a preface to his book. A preface (he said) always put him in mind of Ham let's exclamation to the tardy player, Leave thy most damnable faces, and begin! Book Description
Excerpt from The Making of a Man: A Novel Industry of the place. The Stourton Granite Company made pretty constant calls upon him, and gave him enough work, of a rough-and-ready character, to keep his surgical hand in. For the quarries were prolific in accidents: hardly a week passed by without a damaged limb or worse, from falling stone or runaway truck or slippery foothold. Stourton was all scarred and seamed with quarries, dotted with mounds of rubbish, poisoned with flying clouds of dust and smoke, deafened by the grinding clatter of machinery. It was not, for its own sake, an ideal place to live in; and possibly this was one reason why its doctors were so ready to exchange into another practice. Other reasons might have been found in the fact that the quarrymen belonged to a club, and displayed a natural inclination to get something mare than their money's worth out of their medical attendant; and also in the fact that the neighbourhood was not particularly rich in possible patients of the best class. Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
