They must therefore be connected, as is represented by the sympathetic ganglia and nerves. As all these kinds of apparatus serve to organize the body and preserve it, they may be properly grouped, and called the grand apparatus of Organic Life, which, added to that of Rela tion, form the body. Thus by a glance of the eye, the use, relation, and dependence of all parts are seen, and the Italics give hygienic hints, to wit: Properly 1. Ed ate the Mind. 2. Exercise and repose app. Of R. 3. Of course, each nucleus of the above tableau might be expanded and form a tableau by itself, but the object in this case was, instead of expanding, to condense to the utmost pos sible degree, and present to the mature mind the whole matter in, as it were, a nutshell, so that each word should be a chap ter, and the half a page an entire volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The Origin of the Moving School in Massachusetts The first four chapters - those which deal with the evolution of school control and of school support - may not seem to be logically connected with the subject proper. They are, in fact, an introduction to it, made necessary for the reasons that school control up to the present time has been considered as progressing during the seventeenth century from control of the many to con trol of the few, whereas the reverse is the truth; and also because no study has yet been made, and the results presented, of the subject of school support for this period. While there is a unity in the whole by reason of the fact that it was written from a single point of view - that of describing in a complete manner the origin of the moving school, yet the discussion of the reasons for its creation begins with Chapter V. The preceding chapters serve the purpose of paving the way for a satisfactory presenta tion of the subject proper as contained in the last six chapters. Book Description
Excerpt from Abstract of the Proceedings: Of the Massachusetts Teachers' Association, 1845-80 The Massachusetts Teachers' Association was organized in 1845. Its history is substantially embodied in the following abstract of its proceedings. In preparing this abstract, the committee to whom the work was assigned have aimed to record every important act of the Association; to give the names of all persons who have favored it with lectures, papers, or illustrative exercises, and the subjects thereof; to specify the topics of all the discussions and the persons who participated in them; and to furnish a complete list of the officers of the Association and their time of service, and of the editors of the Massachusetts Teacher. The limits necessarily assigned to this publication are such as to forbid all attempts to present an abstract of the discussions. Such an abstract would fill several volumes. The changes made from time to time in the Constitution of the Association have been stated in immediate connection with the original articles. Two of the changes are specially noteworthy, as having been the occasion of long-continued discussions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Abstract of the Massachusetts School Returns: For 1839-40 Another very important requisite in a teacher is a skill in governing a school. Unless good order is kept in school, there can be but little improvement. This is a faculty, the deficiency of which can never be made up by the application of corporal punishment. Children will. Very soon learn whether order is to be observed or not. And since we have, in all our Common Schools, those who are incapable of governing themselves, they must be governed, or there is an end to the improvement of that school. Your committee feel, therefore, con strained to direct your attention to these qualifications in a teacher, because they feel that our schools have suffered in consequence of deficiencies in these particulars. They have called your attention to these particulars, in hope that the several districts would instruct their prudential committees to make due inquiries concerning the character of the individuals who apply for our schools helbra they employ them.
