Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1888, Vol. 18 This remarkable book is the outgrowth of a feeling widely prevalent in qur day, that the whole subject of God's revelation of himself to men, and specifically the revelation alleged to have been incarnate in Christ, should undergo revision, and be-lifted to such altitude of advantage as the wondrously increased knowl edge of our time will admit. Old methods, and the earlier apol ogetic conceptions, are felt to be somewhat outgrown, especially when confronted with a species of skepticism which boasts itself of new and decisive tests, and sets itself uf) as the very mouth piece of the latest deliverances of science shutting the knowl edge of God forever from men. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1887, Vol. 17 It was platq, who first enunciated the doctrine of absolute beauty, of beauty, that is, in its far-off aboriginal source. That poet-philosopher meditated every deepest subject of human re search in a halo of beauty; and it may be said of him that de spite his crotchet against the fine arts, the aesthetic glory of the Greek mind rose to its zenith in him. He saw, as we all now steadily see, notwithstanding persistent attempts in certain quarters to disturb this conviction, that the universe is every where wrapped round with a photosphere of beauty; that all being is pervaded by it; and that it has its primitive sources in the very essenee-of things. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1883, Vol. 13 In proportion as men recognized the necessity of assigning to the bishop this two-fold relation to the single congregation and to the Church, they endeavored also to develop loftier con ceptions of the position and the office of the bishop in the con gregation. These conceptions, however, differed widely in them selves. Ignatius says, the' bishop presides as the representative of God, the presbyters as the representatives of the Apostles. He holds that we are to be subject to the bishop as Christ was to the Father, and he makes our relation to Christ dependent upon our relation to the bishop. According to the Clementines, the bishop is the representa tive of God and of Christ to the Church. The Church is com pared to a ship. God is the captain of it, Christ the steersman, thebishop the strokesman. He is the Visible representative of Christ. He therefore who sins against the bishop sins against Christ, and he only can be saved who submits himself to the bishop. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1899, Vol. 29 Fore there has been any application or use of these means: It is contrary to the teaching of Lutheran theology as to bap tismal grace itself - placing before baptism the great grace of faith which that theology declares to be sought tfirougk bap tismal grace. And the assumption of personal faith in an um conscious babe is explicitly excluded by the steady confessional of faith, as, necessarily involving a knowledge of the gospel truths and promises and a trusting intelligent acceptance of them. Our examination has further shown that there never was any real necessity for the introduction of the idea of child faith, as Lutheran theology has had from the beginning and apart from this idea a full evangelical basis for infant baptism in the office, given by the everlasting to the parental faith in the divinely established solidarity of the family organ ism. God has provided the faith that is to cover and act for the unconscious life and its interests among his people, in a clear covenan't order that, without fiction, seals, through baptism, as in place of circumcision, the righteousness of faith to the ih fantile life in the believing family and Church. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1892, Vol. 22 The preaching of the truth is a great work. There is no greater. But the preacher is not exempt from certain dangers which grow out of the conditions under which he works. Even when he is doing his work most conscientiously he may be most liable to stumble. Parnassus has its pitfalls. The most sacred calling of all has its dangers. Let us run up a flag at several points, for the common safety. The preacher is in danger of knowing his creed better than his Bible. He must have a creed. He ought to believe in it thoroughly or renounce it. Our acquaintance with men and churches will teach us that the men who declaim against creed are usually narrower, (when you find out what they really do believe), than the average creed believer. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1896, Vol. 26 The pulpit is preeminently a Christian institution. Before its appearance in the' Christian Church its place and power were unknown. Neither philosopher nor philanthropist, neither pro phet nor reformer knew its legitimate use. Public addresses and impassioned appeals were indeed not uncommon, but we no where find the appointment of an order of men, and the desig nation of a specific time for the elucidation and enforcement of a system of doctrine and worship. The results of an eighteen century experiment are now before the world and challenge ex amination. Of the Wisdom of this appointment and the perma nency of its influence there can be no question. In place as well as in purpose the founder of our faith is infallible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
