Book Description
The National Book Award winning author returns to his original fictional territory--the lives of the dispossessed in San Francisco--with a parable about the limitations of desire and life at the margins of society In such earlier works of fiction as The Rainbow Stories and The Royal Family, William T. Vollmann wrote of pimps, prostitutes, addicts and homeless dreamers in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. In this new novel, Vollmann returns there with a story that centers around a woman with magical powers whom everyone loves, and who has to love them all back. After being initiated into a coven of island witches, Neva begins to fulfill her fate in a Tenderloin dive bar. Her worshippers include Richard, the introverted, alcoholic, occasionally omniscient narrator; a profane, aggressive transgender sex worker named Shantelle; the brisk but motherly barmaid Francine; and the former Frank, who has renamed herself after her idol Judy Garland. When Judy starts to love Neva too much, Judy's retired policeman boyfriend embarks on a mission of exposure and destruction. Crafted out of language by turns spiritual and sexually graphic, The Lucky Star aches with compassion as it explores celebrity culture, gender identity, incest, Christian sacrifice and, most of all, the quotidian and sometimes faltering heroism of marginalized people who in the face of humiliation and outright violence seek to love in their own way, and stand up for who they are.

Book Description
Policing The Lucky Country addresses key challenges of contemporary Australian policing, and places them within the context of Australia's particular culture and history. The book's approach is to combine policing case studies with an analysis of the wider social and political environment. Policing students are given information which enables them to think critically about contemporary policing practice and to understand the factors behind pervasive attitudes in the forces and the community. In this way, it aims to increase each officer's range of responses, leading to appropriate policing practices and increased safety for the officer. One of the key strengths of the book is the discussion of policing and indigenous persons, with articles on policing indigenous peoples and indigenous participation in policing. Specific police-indigenous clashes are examined and situated within the Aboriginal policies of the day. This historical perspective illuminates the discussion of current police force relationships with, and responsibilities towards, indigenous persons. Other issues considered - the use of technology, the enforcement of drug laws, the maintenance of public order, the role of police in industrial disputes, the social construction of crime - are studied in similar fashion, and provide a useful source of information and discussion about areas of policing relevant to contemporary police work. This book is designed for first year policing students, but will also be useful in criminology courses.

Book Description
Founded by Peter the Great in 1718, Russia’s police were key instruments of tsarist power. In the reign of Alexander II (1855-1881), local police forces took on new importance. The liberation of 23 million serfs from landlord control, growing fear of crime, and the terrorist violence of the closing years challenged law enforcement with new tasks that made worse what was already a staggering burden. (“I am obliged to inform Your Imperial Highness that the police often fail to carry out their assignments and, when they do execute them, they do so poorly because of their moral corruption...”) This book describes the regime’s decades-long struggle to reform and strengthen the police. The author reviews the local police’s role and performance in the mid-nineteenth century and the implications of the largely unsuccessful effort to transform them. From a longer-term perspective, the study considers how the police’s systemic weaknesses undermined tsarist rule, impeded a range of liberalizing reforms, perpetuated reliance on the military to maintain law and order, and gave rise to vigilante justice. While its primary focus is on European Russia, the analysis also covers much of the imperial periphery, discussing the police systems in the Baltic Provinces, Congress Poland, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia.
