Book Description
Many people probably didnt think that Phyllis was anything special. Single lady that lived alone all of her life. No kids. No husband. No grand career. But Phyllis had an active inner life along with an adventuresome spirit that led her into all sorts of situations. She worked for the American Embassy in Spain and Greece just after World War II, biked and skied around Europe with her dog Chispa, worked with famous midcentury Modernist architect E. Stuart Williams, had movie legend Pepe Serna for a landlord, and once had to have Jos Greco do her plumbing! And on a hair-thin budget she managed to survive and weather the storms that one has in life, all while supporting those less fortunate. She indeed was special to those around her. This book of poetry and escapades is a revelation about the uniqueness of us all, if we just look hard enough to find it. ... and Phyllis thought to herself, ... Here I am, drinking whiskey and dancing with a man who is an almost total stranger in a night club in Basel, Switzerland, at three in the morning. Not bad for a middle-aged school teacher from California!

Book Description
Love, betrayal, heartaches and tragedy combine with history to make this book one that will find a place in the reader's heart for a long time after the final page is read. In the Shadow of the Lone Cypress tells the story of a long-ago Florida as seen through the eyes of Dr. Drew Duncan, a wealthy Baltimore physician who first comes to the state as an Army volunteer during the Spanish-American War. The historical novel paints vivid pictures of Florida at the beginning of the 20th century and reaches the climax in 1926 when one of the deadliest hurricanes that ever hit Florida drowns hundreds of people in the town where he and his family had settled on the shores of Lake Okeechobee. Through the drama of Dr. Duncan's life, the reader will learn about the Seminole Indians, early events and prominent people responsible for the early development of Florida, including the first efforts to drain the Everglades for commercial purposes.

Book Description
California's "Big Four" railroad tycoons built the Hotel del Monte to be the most elegant seaside resort in the world. Although it boasted 126 landscaped acres when it was constructed in 1880, pampered guests, including presidents and kings, stars and magnates, needed a larger playground. Owners added the 7,000-acre Del Monte Forest and 17-Mile Drive, planned to optimize picturesque spots along the Monterey coast, like Cypress Point and Pebble Beach. Burned to the ground in 1887 and 1924, the Del Monte became more luxurious with each incarnation, at one time incorporating a glass-roofed swimming pavilion, racetrack, lake, tennis courts, and Del Monte Golf Course, now the oldest continuously operating golf course in the West. The third hotel became the Naval Postgraduate School in 1952.

Book Description
From Fort Pickens in the Panhandle to Fort Jefferson in the ocean 40 miles beyond Key West, historical travelers will find many adventures waiting for them in Florida. In this new updated edition the author presents 74 of his favorites—17 of them are new to this edition, and the rest have been completely updated. Along the Gulf Coast, see Henry Plant's Moorish jewel of a hotel in Tampa; John Ringling's home and art and circus museums in Sarasota; and the humble homes of Cuban and Italian cigar workers in legendary Ybor City. Up in north Florida visit Civil War battlefields; stroll the University of Florida campus; and see buffalo and wild Spanish horses on Paynes Prairie. In central Florida explore Eatonville, home of writer Zora Neale Hurston, and listen to carillon music as you stroll the gardens around Bok Tower. Down in the keys find the 250-year-old wreck of the San Pedro, a "living museum in the sea" and the Key West home of famous author Ernest Hemingway.
