Say the words audibly, so as to practice both tongue and ear. No English words must be allowed to come into your mind while you say the French ones. If necessary, say the first sentence, for example, as follows: Je (pointing to yourself), salue (performing the action), de la main (looking at your hand). Go on in this way until you realize the fact that you can do without English. 11.--THE HAND. LA MAIN. Salute with your hand, saying at the same time: Je salue de la main, which means: "I salute with my hand" (literally: with the hand.) Raise your hand, and say: Je leve la main, which means: "I raise my hand." Hold up your hand (keeping it raised), saying: Je tiens la main levee, which means: "I hold up my hand." Stretch (or hold) out your right hand, saying: Je tends la main droite, which means: "I stretch out my right hand." Shut (or close) your left hand, saying: Je ferme la main gauche, which means: "I shut my left hand." 12.--Repeat these actions and words until the latter are as easy for you to say as the corresponding English ones. 13.--The best way to practice is to say the sentences aloud for five or ten minutes at a time several times a day. Much more will be accomplished in this way than by studying for a whole hour. Utilize your spare moments and study frequently, not long. THE NEXT STEP. 14.--Having indelibly associated the action with the corresponding French expression, the next step is to vary this expression in accordance with the genius of the language.
