Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Abraham Lincoln This book tries to avoid, on the one hand, the formal biography with its bristling array of names and dates; and on the other, the panegyric of praise. It is a story-telling ao count emphasizing the picturesque and human phases of his career. It tries to depict the boy and man as the friend and neighbor that Lincoln himself tried to be all through life. Book Description
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Principles of Abraham Lincoln Over two centuries and a half have passed away since the ruler of any great Nation of the world has fallen by the murderous attack of an assassin; and for the first time in our history there is blood on the Presidential chair of our Republic. Death is almost always saddening. The passing away of some dear friend from our earthly sight for ever, fills the heart with sorrow. When it strikes down one who fills honorably a position of influence and power, as in the case of our two Presidents who died of disease in the White House, the sincerest grief is felt throughout the land. But when this affliction is aggravated by death coming through the hand of a murderer, it is not strange that the wave of we sweeps gloomily over a nation, which sits down to mourn in sackcloth, its pulses of business stilled, feeling in every individual heart as if there was one dead at our own hearth-stones. Book Description
Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 8: A History Cm.1. Circle. AS fast as one name was discovered and published it was cast aside and another adopted, and the same organization with the same mem hership appeared successively under the name we have mentioned and those of The Order Of American Knights, The Order of the Star, and the Sons of Liberty. These secret organizations possessed a Singular charm to uneducated men, independent Of their political sympathies; and this attraction, combined with the fact that they could not in plain daylight inflict any injury upon the Government, drove many thousands of the lower class of Democrats into these furtive lodges. Book Description
Excerpt from Herndon's Life of Lincoln: The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln A quarter OF A century has well-nigh rolled BY since the tragic death of Abraham Lincoln. The prejudice and bitterness with which he was assailed have disappeared from the minds of men, and the world is now beginning to view him as a great historical character. Those who knew and walked with him are gradually passing away, and ere long the last man who ever heard his voice or grasped his hand will have gone from earth. With a View to throwing a light on some attributes of Lincoln's char acter heretofore obscure, and thus contributing to the great fund of history which goes down to posterity, these vol umes are given to the world. If Mr. Lincoln is destined to fill that exalted station in history or attain that high rank in the estimation of the coming generations which has been predicted of him, it is alike just to his memory and the proper legacy of man kind that the whole truth concerning him should be known. If the story of his life is truthfully and courageously told - nothing colored or suppressed; nothing false either written or suggested - the reader will see and feel the presence of the living man. He will, in fact, live with him and be moved to think and act with him. If, on the other hand, the story is colored or the facts in any degree suppressed, the reader will be not only misled, but im posed upon as well. At last the truth will come, and no man need hope to evade it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
