Excerpt from The Life of Thomas Arnold, D.D In presenting to the public this brief sketch of the character and career of so remarkable and truly great a man as Dr. Arnold, I feel that no apology is required; for next to our own individual, and too often dearly bought experience, the records of one who has already fought the good fight, and won the victory on the battle-field of human life, must needs be of the highest value, and most significant import. Lengthened prefatory remarks are likewise superfluous. It were presumptuous as well as unnecessary to criticise sentiments, to account for actions, to eulogise or to deprecate details of character, that will be far better appreciated by their natural development, as they arise in due order through the course of the biography itself. The life of Dr. Arnold, if it be not most unworthily written, ought to speak for itself, to proclaim its own inherent value, and to convey without note or comment that instruction which, in itself, it is so wonderfully adapted to afford. To Canon Stanley I beg to express my great obligation, and my sincere gratitude, for his kindness and condescension, in allowing me so freely to avail myself of the letters and journals, already published in his own invaluable memoir of Dr. Arnold, to which, otherwise, I could have had very limited or no access. Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D, Vol. 2 of 2: Late Head-Master of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford There is little to distinguish the next three years cf Dr. Arnold's life from those which precede. The strong feeling against him, though with some abatement of its vehemence, still continued; the effect of it was perhaps visible in the slight falling off in the numbers of the school in 1837-38, at the time of the very height of its reputation at the Universities; and in his own profession it appeared so generally to prevail, that, on occasion of a proposal to him from the Bishop of Norwich (Stanley), to preach his Consecration sermon at Lambeth, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Howley) thought it his duty to withhold his permission, solely on the ground of the unfavourable reception which he supposed it would meet among the clergy. Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D, Vol. 1: Late Head-Master or Rugby School, and Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford The sources from which this work has been drawn have necessarily been exceedingly various. It was in fact originally intended that the several parts should have been supplied by different writers, as in the instance of the valuable contribution which, in addition to his kind assistance throughout, has been furnished to the earlier part by Mr. Justice Coleridge; and although, in its present shape, the responsibility of arranging and executing it has fallen upon one person, yet it should still be clearly understood how largely I have availed myself of the aid of others, in order to supply the defects of my own personal knowledge of Dr. Arnold's life and character, which was confined to the intercourse I enjoyed with him, first as his pupil at Rugby, from 1829 to 1834, and thenceforward, on more familiar terms, to the end of his life. To his family, I feel that the fewest words will best express my sense, both of the confidence which they reposed in me by intrusting to my care so precious a charge, and of the manifold kindness with which they have assisted me, as none others could.
