Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Moliere, Vol. 3 Thus, all my authorities are French. I know that within the last twenty years some English writers have made a study of Moliere, and have brought out editions with notes of the chief of his plays. But as the greater part of my work was done out of England, where I had not access to these books, it is not altogether my fault that I have not been able to apply to them for assistance. I acknowledge very gladly my obligations to many French authors, for they have taught me much; and it is only natural to suppose that to some extent my thoughts have followed theirs. But I wish to say that I have not knowingly stolen their ideas and given them as my own. It is generally easy to quote the source of authority when dealing with facts, and I believe I have done so sufficiently. I trust I shall not be trespassing too far on the goodwill of French writers on Moliere if I assume that literary courtesy is willing to allow fair borrowing of facts and details when due acknowledgment is made of the loan. But literary courtesy does not extend its hospitality to robbery of ideas with silence about the theft. I hope I have not sinned in that respect. Book Description
Excerpt from The School for Husbands, Vol. 3 of 3: Or, Moliere's Life and Times Amounted to a perfect delirium, as the royal cor te'ge defiled from the Louvre. It was lucky that the streets were strewed knee-deep with flowers; for the people, not content with waving their caps and handkerchiefs, and making one deafening shout of the myriad echoes of vrvn LE roi - for the most part knelt down to bless him as he passed - and certainly, their semi-adoration seemed, in some degree, justified by the appear ance of their idol. All that Louis Quatorze had ever wanted to make his beauty indisputable, was a certain delicacy - and this, his illness had now given to his really handsome face - the dress he wore was also peculiarly becoming; as it was that sort of half armour, worn by great military com manders at the time, consisting of a mailed and jewelled steel corselet, over a rich grenat velvet tunic, and a falling collar of magnificent point d'alencon, the cords and tassels of which, were of small strung pearls, rubies, and brilliants the studdings of the corselet or cuimsse, were also of brilliants and sapphires, as well as the aiguilettes, while a large diamond sun blazed in the centre of B 2. Excerpt from The School for Husbands, Vol. 1 of 3: Or Moliere's Life and Times Suetonius tells us, that when the youthful Nero was brought the first death-warrant to sign, his heart was lacerated by the deepest, and most sincere, emotions of pity and regret, and that, in appending his signature to it, the future tyrant exclaimed, with genuine remorse. Book Description
Excerpt from Scenes of Parisian Life, Vol. 3: Cousin Bette It is a literary caprice which one may gratify once in a way, especially in a work wherein one seeks to portray all the forms in which thought may be clothed. Most disputes among men, are due to the fact that there are people, learned and ignorant alike, so con stituted that they can see but one aspect of a fact or an idea, and invariably claim that the one they have seen is the only true, the only sound one. So it was that the Holy Book prophetically announced God will give the world over to dissension. I confess that that single passage of Scripture should lead the Holy See to bestow upon you the govern ment of the two Chambers, in obedience to the sen tence expounded in 1814, by the ordinance of Louis XVIII.
