Book Description
This biography covers both the literary and political career of John Morley, later Lord Morley of Blackburn (1838-1923). As a writer, Morley made his reputation as the radical editor of The Fortnightly Review from 1867 to 1882. This was an influential periodical for which Morley commissioned articles by writers such as Leslie Stephen and Frederic Harrison, and for which Morley wrote many articles himself. As a politician, Morley worked very closely with William Ewart Gladstone, particularly in the two attempts to introduce legislation providing for Irish home rule, with a Dublin parliament. Finally, at the end of his political career, Morley served as secretary of state for India (1905-1910) in the great Liberal government of Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith. Working with the viceroy Lord Minto, Morley was responsible for the first tentative steps toward a democratic government in India. Morley was strongly opposed to militarism: he had stood out against the war with the Boers in South Africa and he resigned from office in 1915 in protest against the declaration of war on Germany. This biography utilizes extensive primary archival material, including Morley's own diaries and letters, which have only recently become available.

Book Description
Indian Speeches (1907-1909) is a collection of speeches by John Morley, the British Secretary of State for India from 1905 to 1910. The speeches were delivered during a period of great political and social change in India, and they reflect Morley's views on the British Empire, Indian nationalism, and the future of India. In his speeches, Morley argued that the British Empire was a force for good in the world, and that it had a responsibility to help its colonial subjects develop their own cultures and institutions. He also argued that Indian nationalism was a natural and positive development, and that the British should work with Indian nationalists to build a more democratic and just India. Morley's speeches were controversial at the time, and they continue to be debated today. However, they are an important historical record of a critical period in the history of British India.

Book Description
This biography delves into the fascinating life of Edmund Burke, an Anglo-Irish statesman, economist, and philosopher who served as an MP in the House of Commons of Great Britain. Burke believed in the importance of manners and virtues in society and the role of religious institutions in promoting moral stability. He criticized the British government's taxation policies towards the American colonies and supported the rights of the colonists to resist authority. His support for Catholic emancipation and opposition to the French Revolution cemented his place as a leading figure in the conservative faction of the Whig Party. Burke's ideas influenced both conservatives and liberals in the 19th century, and in the 20th century, he became widely regarded as the philosophical founder of conservatism, particularly in the United States.
