Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Giuseppe Garibaldi When influenced for good, no character was more glorious than Garibaldi's. For example, throughout the Sicilian campaign his bark was guided over those troubled waters with Cavour at the helm. Cavour had to combat at that time the Massim'an I'dea, ' and for a while the two great political stars Of Italian freedom the Constitutionalist and the Republican - fought with occult weapons for the control over Garibaldi, who re presented the power. Eventually Cavour gained the day. And it was the proudest moment Of Garibaldi's life when he presented his constitutional sovereign with two crowns A word from Cavour could have arrested the expedi tion at its very outset, but he suffered it to proceed. A word from Cavour could have restored the Bourbom to Naples, and have roused all Europe against Garibaldi; but he determined otherwise, and then when he had used Garibaldi's power to the utmost limits, Cavour knew when to step in and prevent the rash folly with which Garibakfi would have marched on Rome and embroiled himself with France and Austria. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Giuseppe Garibaldi: Italian Hero and Patriot The liberation of his country was the dream of Garibaldi's existence and long as was the exile which fate condemned him to pass in dreary yearnings for his native land, it was perhaps better for him and for Italy that he should have been spared the protracted apprenticeship to conspiracy and intrigue undergone by Mazzini and his friends. Our hero had not the soul of a conspirator. He could not have hung on the skirts of inaction, satisfied with a perpetual cycle of plots and projects, half-hearted insurrections and precipitate retreats. If Garibaldi had never gone to South America never left the company of his restless and injudicious fellow countrymen, he would in all probability have thrown himself, even single-handed, upon the swords of the Neapolitan or Austrian tyrants, and died on the battle field or in prison, leaving his name undistinguished and his task unfulfilled. It was indeed to his participation in the earlier attempts of Mazzini's disciples that Garibaldi owed his exile; but throughout his long absence from Italy he never forgot that his country was being crushed under the heel of an oppression scarcely credible in the present day; and he never ceased to cherish the hope that a time would come when he could return to the well-beloved land, and place himself at the head of her deliverers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of General Garibaldi: Translated From His Private Papers; With the History of His Splendid Exploits in Rome, Lombardy, Sicily and Naples, to the Present Time The following pages are principally written by the pen of the hero of our age, that pure-hearted man - that devoted patriot, and noble, generous, and disinterested philanthropist - that spirited, undaunted, and indomitable warrior, whose splendid deeds have dazzled the world, and whose career, according to his own recent declaration, will be brought to its close by a final triumph, for which he is now preparing, to be gained early in the present year. While General Garibaldi resided in New York and its vicinity, in the years 1850 and '51, the author of this book enjoyed his acquaintance, and the favor of receiving from him his private memoirs, with permission to translate and publish them. They had just been prepared for the press, when Garibaldi requested that they might be withholden from the public while he remained in this country, probably because he preferred to be unnoticed, being at that time employed in making candles on Staten Island, and naturally fond of retirement. The first part of this volume, to page 210, contains a literal translation from his original private manuscripts, in which a clear, unadorned English style was adopted, as nearly corresponding, as the translator's abilities would allow, to the manly and pure Italian of the author. Book Description
Excerpt from Autobiography of Giuseppe Garibaldi, Vol. 1 of 3: Authorized Translation; 1807-1849 While Italy awaits the philosophical historian of her political evolutions and revolutions - annals, chronicles, memoirs, biographies and autobiographies, series of letters, diplomatic papers and correspondence, revolutionary documents have been, during the last twenty-five years, published in rapid succession, and thus a vast material is being stored for future "architects of history." Nor is the stock by any means exhausted; the key to many unravelled mysteries being more or less jealously guarded in the record offices of the state, while the "key of keys" reposes in the sanctum sanctorum of royal archives. Contemporary writers of events in which they have been actors or interested spectators, with the strictest intention to be veracious, rarely succeed in telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, seeing that each narrator surveys facts from his own point of view; nor does an honest desire to he impartial ensure impartiality, since the writer's individual beliefs and opinions must necessarily influence his deductions and bias his judgments.
