Book Description
All history, says Emerson, "resolves itself into the biographies of a few stout and earnest persons." These remarks find exemplification in the life of William Ewart Gladstone, of whom they are pre-eminently true. His recorded life, from the early period of his graduation to his fourth premiership, would embrace in every important respect not only the history of the British Empire, but very largely the international events of every nation of the world for more than half a century. William Ewart Gladstone, M.P., D.C.L., statesman, orator and scholar, was born December 27, 1809, in Liverpool, England. The house in which he was born, number 62 Rodney Street, a commodious and imposing "double-fronted" dwelling of red brick, is still standing. In the neighborhood of the Rodney Street house, and a few years before or after the birth of William E. Gladstone, a number of distinguished persons were born, among them William Roscoe, the writer and philanthropist, John Gibson, the sculptor, Doctor Bickersteth, the late Bishop of Ripon, Mrs. Hemans, the poetess, and Doctor James Martineau, Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy in Manchester New College, and the brother of Harriet Martineau, the authoress.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Right Honourable William Ewart Gladstone, M. P., D. C. L., &C The leading purpose of this work is of a biographical and historical, rathe1 than of a polemical character. It has been my object to place before the reader the story of Mr. Gladstone s life - and his relations to the great movements of his time - through the medium of his writings and speeches. In the Parliamentary portion of the work, I have been sparing of comment, for two reasons first, to have discussed at length the manifold political acts of this eminent statesman would have expanded this biography greatly beyond its present dimensions and, secondly, the period has not yet arrived when it is possible to estimate (even were I competent to do so) the full effect and influence of those great legislative measures with which Mr. Gladstone's name is associated. In a work of this kind it would be impossible for the author to conceal the nature of his political sentiments; neither have I the wish to do so; but a high admiration for the subject of this biography is not incompatible with an impartial recognition of certain errors of judgment. Nor, ln sometimes st1ongly condemning the action of his oppo nents, have I endeavoured unduly to asperse them. Amongst such opponents, during the last forty years, have been men entitled to the respect and gratitude of the country; and England is proud of all ner sons who have rendered her distin guished service, be their party name Whig or Tory, Liberal or Conservative.
