Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Times of Henry Clay, Vol. 2 of 2 In the introduction of this work, the author announced as one of his rules in its composition, that he had confined himself to the life and career of Mr. Clay, and that he does not profess to give history any further than Mr. Clay has been connected with it. He also suggested, that ho has not been able to use all the materials found within these limits. It will be obvious, therefore, that wide as has been his range, and comprehensive as has been the view of public affairs which he has been obliged to take, the history contained in these volumes is rather personal than general. It can not but be observed, that Mr. Clay's public life has been one of conflict, and that the principles and measures he has advocated, have been stormed by opposition, often amounting to animated hostility, and sometimes to bitter personal animosity. It can not, therefore, be surprising, but should be expected, that the author, sympathizing with Mr. Clay's principles, and with himself when assailed on account of his principles, should earnestly, when he could conscientiously, defend both the one and the other. How else could he do justice to his subject? This duty of the author has necessarily led him to use some freedom of remark toward public men. The times of Mr. Clay have been characterized with strife for great and vital principles of a young republic. In whatever he has been right, we could not be vindicated, without a showing of the wrong, and it has so happened, that the wrong done to the country, as well as to Mr. Clay, has, in some instances, according to the convictions of the author, been very great and flagrant. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Speeches of Henry Clay, Vol. 2 Whilst we thus behold the entire failure of all that was foretold against the system, it is a subject of just felicitation to its friends, that all their anticipations of its benefits have been fulfilled, or are in progress of fulfilment. The honorable gentleman from South Carolina has made an allusion to a speech made by me, in 1824, in the other house, in support of the tariff, and to which, otherwise, I should not have particularly referred. But I would ask any one, who can now command the courage to peruse that long produc tion, what principle there laid down is not true? What prediction then made has been falsified by practical experience? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Times of Henry Clay A great orator lives in his speeches; an eminent statesman, in the wise and patriotic measures which he may have devised and advocated. That record of the career of these individuals is most complete, which combines together such a proportion of both these kinds of achievement, as will reproduce most successfully the peculiar individuality of the man. Book Description
Excerpt from Henry Clay, Vol. 2 The measure proposed was not a sudden contriv ance on Clay's part. He himself subsequently said that he had conceived the plan while on a visit in Philadelphia, before the opening of the session, where he had conferences concerning it with several manufacturers, who concurred. It was communicated to Webster, who did not ap prove of it. Upon his return to Washington, Clay had interviews with Calhoun, who agreed to his scheme. Then and there a singular coalition was formed between the champion of protection and the most absolute free-trader; the chief of the latitudinarians and the strictest of strict construc tionists the emancipationist at heart and the dev otec of the divine right of slavery; the most en thusiastic Union man and the apostle of the right, of nullification and secession.
