Book Description
THE RAILROAD TO NOWHERE contains the stories of five northwestern North Carolina business ventures: the Copper Knob Mine (a.k.a. the Gap Creek Mine); "Cowles' Stand" (the A. D. Cowles & Co. Store); the Deep Gap Tie & Lumber Co. RR (the "Railroad to Nowhere"); the V. L. Moretz & Son Lumber Co. (formerly the Deep Gap Tie & Lumber Co.); and Appalachian Ski Mountain (formerly the Blowing Rock Ski Lodge). These businesses were all located in the North Carolina counties of either Watauga or Ashe (BOTH counties, in the case of the Deep Gap Tie & Lumber Co. Railroad). Like all business ventures, some were successful, some were, well, not so successful. (One of the businesses, Appalachian Ski Mountain, continues today, very much alive and healthy.) Even though these business were diverse in their activities - a copper mine, a general store, a railroad, a lumber company, a ski resort - they all can trace their roots back to one man: Calvin J. Cowles.

Book Description
Appalachia: The place and its people have long inspired a special fascination among travelers and commentators. The rugged, ecologically rich mountains, at once forbidding and inviting, have provided a place of retreat and exploration for lovers of natural beauty and outdoor adventure, while the region’s resources have long lured both capitalists intent on creating wealth and regular folks just looking for a steady wage. The inhabitants native to the region have often been held up as pure, strong, and self-sufficient on the one hand, and derided as primitive, backward, and exotic, on the other. Not quite south or north, east or west, the region continues to defy easy classification. Yet it emerges in Historic Photos of Appalachia as both distinct and as familiarly American. The nearly 200 photographs included here portray the region’s land and people in all their distinctive and sometimes surprising specificity—including views of towns, houses, and farms; families at home and on the job; railroads, mining, and logging; and beautiful streams and mountain landscapes.

Book Description
Professor Sulzer introduces us to both the mighty and the humble lines that once traversed this important railroad state. Here we meet Tennessee's own Nashville & Chattanooga (later called the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis) and the Tennessee Central. We also come across the Dummy Line, the Jerkwater, and the Tweetsie. We follow the story as 4,078 miles of rail in 1920 dwindles to 2,969 by 1975. But this is not a mere compilation of dry statistics on track closings and running schedules. It is a book full of the life and vigor of Tennessee's economic arteries. Although Tennessee's mining and logging resources were depleted and the rail lines abandoned, the isolated towns and villages find their voice in Professor Sulzer's storytelling.
