Francis Blackstone is a fourteen-year-old gunslinger with a heart of gold. He's fallen for the mayor's daughter and resolves to make his mark, and his fortune, to win her favour. And what better way than to rob a Manhattan Company bank? Enter Bob Temple, the volatile outlaw who takes Francis under his wing-- though not without a degree of suspicion-- and so begins the adventures of the Blackstone Temple Gang as they crisscross the west in search of treasure, redemption, and the possibility of requited love. After an encounter with a rival gang, Francis and Bob Temple are chased over the Sierras to California, where they enjoy unexpected fame as gentleman bandits. But their newfound celebrity brings hardships as well, and when their final job takes a startling turn, Francis is forced to discover what it means to make peace with a world that stands against him. At once a tribute to boyhood enthusiasm and the heroes of classical quests, Like Rum-Drunk Angels is an offbeat, slightly magical, entirely original retelling of Aladdin as an American western.

Book Description
What is it about humans that makes language possible, and what is it about language that makes us human? If you are reading this, you have done something that only our species has evolved to do. You have acquired a natural language. This book asks, How has this changed us? Where scholars have long wondered what it is about humans that makes language possible, N. J. Enfield and Jack Sidnell ask instead, What is it about humans that is made possible by language? In Consequences of Language their objective is to understand what modern language really is and to identify its logical and conceptual consequences for social life. Central to this undertaking is the concept of intersubjectivity, the open sharing of subjective experience. There is, Enfield and Sidnell contend, a uniquely human form of intersubjectivity, and it is essentially intertwined with language in two ways: a primary form of intersubjectivity was necessary for language to have begun evolving in our species in the first place and then language, through its defining reflexive properties, transformed the nature of our intersubjectivity. In the authors’ analysis, social accountability—the bedrock of society—is grounded in this linguistically transformed, enhanced kind of intersubjectivity. The account of the language-mind-society connection put forward in Consequences of Language is one of unprecedented reach, suggesting new connections across disciplines centrally concerned with language—from anthropology and philosophy to sociology and cognitive science—and among those who would understand the foundational role of language in making us human.

Book Description
Mirror Lake is the true story of Diane, a survivor of inexcusable childhood neglect. At fourteen years old she spent ten days in solitary confinement as punishment for trying to escape from the Minnesota Home School for Girls, where she was sent as a ward of the court. Years later, after an unsuccessful first marriage, she married her childhood sweetheart. After he developed paranoid schizophrenia and attempted suicide, Diane discovered he had become obsessed with murder - and he had a gun. Diane left him to protect her infant daughter. That decision changed her life and brought her to a chance encounter with me at Mirror Lake, in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. I spent the next fifty years with this extraordinary woman, who overcame her early deprivation to lead a vibrant, exceptional life. A talented writer, Diane spent several years writing a frank and honest account of her life, with sensitive and thoughtful insights into her own and others' actions. She is no longer alive to speak for herself, but this book tells her story using her own writings and journals. Our life encompassed passionate commitment, money troubles, conflict, anger, disappointment, reconciliation, and joy. This is our story about our life together, our struggles and sins, and especially the loving, enthusiastic woman Diane was before dementia overwhelmed her. I cared for Diane at home until the end. Dementia ultimately destroyed her passion, drive, and personality, and finally ended her life. I kept a detailed caregiving journal, providing a narrative of those years. After her death I set out on a journey of resolution, healing, and regeneration together with my daughter Lauren, to rebuild my relationship to Lauren and reconnect with my own past, and to seek a new future.

Book Description
In response to the challenge of the Soviet Dragunov self-loading rifle, the British Army adopted the 7.62mm L42A1 bolt-action sniping rifle in 1970. The L42A1 was deployed in Dhofar and Northern Ireland, but arguably saw its finest hour during the Falklands War in 1982. The harsh conditions of the South Atlantic laid bare the L42A1's inadequacies and a new company, Accuracy International, won the contract to replace the L42A1 and the PM Rifle, a world-beating revolutionary design, was adopted in 1985 as the L96A1. Progressively upgraded, the L96A1 went on to serve as the British Army's primary sniper system, being deployed in Northern Ireland, the First Gulf War, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. The L115A3, chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, joined the L96A1 in the front line in 2008 and since 2012 has been Britain's standard issue sniping rifle. Featuring full-colour artwork and close-up photographs, this absorbing study assesses the development, combat use, impact and legacy of these three iconic British sniping weapons.
