Book Description
The follow-up to Foz Meadows's A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, All the Hidden Paths is a sultry political & romantic fantasy exploring gender, sexuality, identity, and self-worth. With the plot against them foiled and the city of Qi-Katai in safe hands, newlywed and tentative lovers Velasin and Caethari have just begun to test the waters of their relationship. But the wider political ramifications of their marriage are still playing out across two nations, and all too soon, they’re summoned north to Tithena’s capital city, Qi-Xihan, to present themselves to its monarch. With Caethari newly invested as his grandmother’s heir and Velasin’s old ghosts gnawing at his heels, what little peace they’ve managed to find is swiftly put to the test. Cae’s recent losses have left him racked with grief and guilt, while Vel struggles with the disconnect between instincts that have kept him safe in secrecy and what an open life requires of him now. Pursued by unknown assailants and with Qi-Xihan’s court factions jockeying for power, Vel and Cae must use all the skills at their disposal to not only survive, but thrive. Because there’s more than one way to end an alliance, and more than one person who wants to see them fail...and they will resort to murder if needed. But while his family is ready to disown him, the Tithenai envoy has a different solution: for Vel to marry his former intended’s brother instead. Caethari Aeduria always knew he might end up in a political marriage, but his sudden betrothal to a man from Ralia, where such relationships are forbidden, comes as a shock. Book Description
Mischief, Magic, Love and War. It is the Year of Our Lord 1601. The Tuscan War rages across the world, and every lord from Navarre to Illyria is embroiled in the fray. Cannon roar, pikemen clash, and witches stalk the night; even the fairy courts stand on the verge of chaos. Five stories come together at the end of the war: that of bold Miranda and sly Puck; of wise Pomona and her prisoner Vertumnus; of gentle Lucia and the shade of Prospero; of noble Don Pedro and powerful Helena; and of Anne, a glovemaker's wife. On these lovers and heroes the world itself may depend. These are the stories Shakespeare never told. Five of the most exciting names in genre fiction today – Jonathan Barnes, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Emma Newman, Foz Meadows and Kate Heartfield – delve into the world the poet created to weave together a story of courage, transformation and magic. Including an afterword by Dr. John Lavagnino, The London Shakespeare Centre, King's College London.

Book Description
A major figure in African American studies, Gates (Harvard)--whose earlier works include Signifying Monkey (CH, Jun'89, 26-5523) and Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Man (CH, Jun'97, 34-5887)--here joins such theorists as Paul Gilroy (The Black Atlantic, CH, May'94, 31-5034), Hazel Carby (Cultures in Babylon, 1999), and Stuart Hall (editor, Representation, 1997) in taking a culture-studies approach to examining the politics and culture of the African diaspora. In four far-ranging chapters (written between 1989 and 1992), Gates considers the British Black Arts Movement and the continuing US "culture wars." Though the study is thought-provoking, this reviewer would have liked a longer preface that could effectively tie together the four separate essays. Gates sometimes (for example, in the essay titled "Critical Fanonism") succumbs to the overly dense language of theory, but at his best--as in the essay "Enlightenment's Esau," in which he makes the case for Edmund Burke as an unlikely early anti-colonialism advocate--he is brilliant. Required reading for scholars of cultural studies and/or black-diaspora studies. Summing Up: Essential. Graduate students, researchers, faculty. Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty. Reviewed by L. J. Parascandola.
