Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Maine Ornithological Society, 1900, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal of Maine Ornithology We have received the second edition Of Our Birds, Their Nests and Eggs, by H. P. White Of Farmington, Maine. It is revised and enlarged, but not exactly, brought up to date. It is also illustrated, but not particularly artistic, and reminds the editor very much of the first volume, which is somewhat mis leading and amusing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Maine Ornithological Society, Vol. 12: March, 1910 When the Wild or Passenger Pigeons were making their last stand in Maine, it was my good fortune to have a flock of eight or ten pass the season of 1877 in a pine grove close by my home. At that time, although they were becoming scarce with us, millions were breeding in Michigan, and the commonly accepted explanation of their diminished numbers in the eastern States was that the wheat fields of the West had tolled them away. Could I have realized that twenty-five years would have seen the practical extinction of this species I venture to say that my note-book would have furnished me more information regarding this particular flock than it does. Under April 24th, I find the first mention of them included in the following: "Returning to North Bridgton to-day, after an absence of two weeks, I find the following birds common: Loons, Wild Pigeons, Red-winged Blackbirds, Golden-winged Woodpeckers, Chipping Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes." Among the most interesting things in Mr. Merrills collection from the State was the first nest and eggs of the Golden-crowned Kinglet ever taken. This is the set described in all the older works dealing with the oology of this part of the country. Another interesting specimen in Mr. Merrills collection was the Kiimlien sGull, taken at the time when this species was just on the point of being described. Mr. Merrills bird was one of those used in differentiating the characteristics of this species. On returning to the hotel from Mr. Merrills, a short business meeting was held in the parlor of the Penobscot Exchange, with President Spinney in the chair. After the reading of the secretarys report of the last annual meeting, the following committees were appointed by the chair. On Nominations: Messrs. Knight, Norton, vSpinney. On Resolutions: Messrs. Swain, Ellis, Powers. On Auditing Accounts: Prof. E.A. Lee; Miss Mabel Ridley. On motion of Mr. Knight, voted that a committee be appointed to prepare the manuscript for publication relating to the birds of Maine, containing brief descriptions of the individual species, nesting habits, and distribution in and out of the State, said manuscript not to exceed three hundred and fifty printed pages. After some discussion this was laid upon the table. On motion of Mr. Ellis the following persons were elected to active membership: Mr. B.N. Allen, Castine; Miss Marina Everett, Camden; Prof. Hurlbert, Bangor; Miss Eora C.Eastman, Portland; Mr. LouisE. Legge, Portland. After the reading of the minutes the meeting adjourned. The evening meeting was called to order in the Ware Parlors by the Secretary, Wm. L.Powers. This was an open meeting, and many citizens of Bangor were present to enjoy the entertainment. The first speaker was Capt. H.L. Spinney, who chose for his subject Birds from a Lighthouse. The next speaker was Arthur H. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Maine Ornithological Society, Vol. 6: January, 1904 While eating our lunch, which as usual we had cooked before leaving camp in the morning, we decided that rather than to turn and take our back tracks that we would, if we could see clear water on either side of us, force our boat into it if possible. By standing up on the boat thwarts we discovered what looked as if it might be the river's channel on our right, and by breaking down the wall of reeds before us with an oar and then pushing with our united strength we succeeded little by little in work ing through. What we had mistaken for the river proved to be but another lagoon or lake which soon came to an end, then ensued another series of pushing and again we were in clear water. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of the Maine Ornithological Society, Vol. 10: March, 1908 The report of the Secretary and Treasurer was read and referred to the Auditing Committee. The report of the Editor was then read and referred to the Auditing Committee. The following committees were appointed: Nomination: - A. H. Norton, Prof. Knight and Miss Marshall. Resolutions: - J. M. Swain, Miss Lewis. Auditing Committee: - Fred M. David, Sherman H. Phillips. The editor's report showed that there is about the same deficit at the close of this year as there was last. The matter was discussed by Prof. Lee, and Messrs. Brownson and Swain. The following names were proposed for membership by the Secretary: Mr. W. L. Brown, Bigelow; Mrs. W. L. Brown, Bigelow; Roy T. David, Damariscotta; H. E. Flynt, Damariscotta. On motion of Mr. Norton, the Secretary was instructed to cast the vote for the society, and the ballot was cast, and President Lee declared the above elected. President Lee then proceeded to his annual address to the Society, which was listened to with a good deal of enthusiasm. He spoke interestingly of the steady, onward march of the society. He spoke of the many dead birds found and reported extensively over the entire State. Many species were reported during the severe storms of last winter, and especially after the heavy fall of snow that came in April after many of our spring arrivals were here. There were many Goshawks reported last winter and also this present winter. One Pine Grosbeak was found dead at Brunswick last week. This was the only Grosbeak he had seen so far this winter. He spoke extensively of the way Mr. Walter H. Rich's book, Feathered Game of the Northeast, has been received, and suggested that every member should have a copy of this valuable work. He then spoke of Prof. Knights work. The Birds of Maine. that is soon to be ready for distribution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
