Excerpt from The Jones Third Reader The chief value of a school reader lies in the quality of the reading matter which it gives to the pupils. The literature supplied in such books should be sane, pure, wholesome, and stimulating. It should present models of thought, examples of simple but heroic living, and in every way prepare the children to strive after what is worthy, rather than to drift in the direction in which a chance current of life may lead them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jones Second Reader The Second Reader makes a distinct advance from the First Reader of this series in the range and character of its vocabulary and in the difficulty of its subject matter. The attention of pupils may now be held through a longer narrative; and a much fuller treatment may now be given to ethical problems, looking toward the formation of ideals of life and conduct. Good literature correctly interpreted teaches its own lessons. When the child has learned to love good litera ture, he absorbs the life-giving elements from it as natu rally as he takes the health-giving portions from the air he breathes. The subject-matter of the Second Reader has been drawn from the various fields of thought and action which especially interest children. Care has been taken to have the ideas embodied in the subject-matter of sufficient variety to assist children to interpret nature and life as exemplified in their daily environment. Book Description
Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Third Reader A classic is something more easily known than defined. It is not necessarily abstruse, difficult, or remote from common life. It is a piece of literature that has received the approval of good judges for a long enough time to make that approval settled. Like good music, it cannot grow old; it is last year's rag-time that becomes unpleasant, not the good old songs. A classic may be as old as Homer, or as new as Hawthorne; it may be as difficult as Dante, or as simple as Mother Goose. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jones Fifth Reader This book is intended as a basal reader for pupils of the sixth, seventh, and eighth years in school. These years make up a period of high enthusiasms and noble impulses. During this period ideals of life and conduct are rapidly shaping them selves in the minds of the growing girls and boys. Susceptible as they are at this age to evil influences, they yet respond most readily to the call of higher motives. Noble, daring, and heroic action, when properly pictured to them, seems native to the human spirit. To rouse and sustain these noble ambitions, to make the right in human action seem reasonable and desirable, to give that general intelligence which underlies helpful social cooperation, and, above all, to permeate this growing intelligence with a pure and deep love for our country and its institutions, - is a dominant purpose of this reader. The selections are taken from the best literature of the English language. A wide range of themes gives breadth and scope to the imagination as well as a foundation for general intelligence as opposed to technical knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jones First Reader This is the first book of a series of Readers intended to cover the reading work of the eight grades of the elementary schools. It is not intended that the series shall furnish all the reading matter needed in these grades, but rather a basal line of thought and a vocab ulary sufficient for the interpretation of all reading matter used in these grades from whatever sources taken. Each book of the series is adapted to its place and part in such a plan. This book begins its work well within the child's present interests, but in some one or more of its lessons pushes each of these interests beyond the point which the child could reach without assistance. The subject-matter of this book has been carefully chosen from all fields of knowledge desirable for children of the age for which it is intended. Nature study has been given a prominent place, especially in the earlier pages. Animals have been presented through their most pleasing and characteristic attributes and the children are led to sympathetic and humane treatment of themthrough a real interest in them and their needs. Through out the book care has been taken to present the elements of ethics as applied concretely to conduct. The greatest service that a series of Readers can render to pupils is to supply each with proper standards of life and conduct. This book, as the first of the series, touches many matters pertaining to life and conduct, showing moral forces at work producing their legitimate effects. The lessons drawn from nature study give preference to the poetical rather than to the scientific interpretation of nature. The poetical interpretation, however, is always based on and developed from a correct relationship of facts, so that the child will have no mistaken notions to correct in his later scientific studies. This book is adapted for use through each or all of the modern methods of teaching beginners to read. The sentence method, the word method, and the phonic method - if such simple processes of teaching may properly be dignified by the term method - may be used to advantage, separately or in happy combination. The modern teacher knows well how to use good reading matter so as to develop the power to read well and at the same time to cultivate the love for good literature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jones Fourth Reader This book is intended to cover the work in reading for the fourth and fifth school years. Pupils who enter the fourth school year are supposed to have mastered to at least a fair degree the mechanics of learning to read. They may therefore begin to appreciate the better class of literature, in which ideas are put forth in artistic form. The transition to such literature must needs be made slowly and carefully, inasmuch as the new matter brings with it a somewhat new vocabulary and a more complicated construction of sentence. The selections in the first part of this reader have been chosen with especial reference to bridging over for the child the natural chasm between the forms of thought and language of childhood and those appropriate to youth. The selections lead to the best in literature that is available for young readers. Attention is called particularly to the fact that many of the selections used are organic parts of larger works, to which the notice and interest of pupils will naturally be directed through the reading of these selected parts. Care has been taken that the part chosen in each case shall constitute an artistic literary whole, while sustaining its organic relations to the work from which it is taken. Great care has also been given to the kind and range of ideas embodied. The book has a distinctly moral bearing, assisting the young to form right ideas of life and conduct. Every department of laudable human aspiration and endeavor is rep resented in some appropriate concrete form, and every noble instinct is reenforced by its appropriate stimulus.
