In a genealogical record the arrangement of branches and persons by astrict rule of chronological priority would seem the most natural and logical, and seniority might well regulate the distribution. But where so little has been ascertained of some branches and so much of others, it was feared this might result in conin sion. The rule has, therefore, been in some meas ure departed from. Captain Archibald Johnston's other sons and descendants have been placed in conformity to the rule but, for convenience sake, the family of his third son, Dr. John Johnston of Kentucky, has been reserved for the last place, and there grouped.
