For the element of unity is lacking to the subject upon which it is proposed to establish a ques tion; and the attributes which it presents are different from, nay, opposed to, one another according to the circumstances in which it has been placed. So the J ews differ essentially from one another according to the nations among which they live and have lived for ages, the different classes to which they belong in these various communities, the several occupations they follow, and the tastes they possess. In political life they cannot be said to form one party, to give a distinct shading to any party, or to enable party politicians to appeal to them A.
