Book Description
This work explores everyday face-to-face interactions between expatriate and host national employees in cross-cultural offices of transnational organizations and corporations. Applying the concepts of cosmopolitanism, social capital, and network theory, the book highlights both “closure” and “openness” in interpersonal interactions thus presenting more nuanced ways of understanding employees’ transnational business/social connections. It also offers useful suggestions, such as the importance of developing a sense of respect for each other, for those who work in transnational office environments in both home and host societies. The author based her findings on one year of intensive fieldwork in Indonesia, which provides an intimate look at the transnational relationships between Japanese expatriate employees and Indonesian host national co-workers. Social science and international business scholars will embrace this ethnographic study of the relationships formed by these professional migrations.

Book Description
Over the last decade, Malay ethnic identity has taken on new life compared to religious identity in and outside Malaysia. This book explores key emblematic features of ethnic and religious identity and the idea of “Malayness” in Australia at a time when Islamic identity has gained prominence on the global stage. The author explores topics such as: • Religion as a powerful basis of personal and collective identification for Malay-Muslim postgraduate students in Western Australia; • Experiences of Malay-Muslim postgraduate students and their relation to Islamic values; • Islamic revivalism and the middle class; • Ethnic and religious factors related to interpersonal communication. Other studies on Malays in Australia tend to focus on the past instead of the problems that new Malays possibly going to face when they reach the continent. This book overcomes that limitation and makes headway in addressing cultural differences related to identity, ethnicity, and religion.

Book Description
Without denying the difficulties that confront migrants and their distant kin, this volume highlights the agency of family members in transnational processes of care, in an effort to acknowledge the transnational family as an increasingly common family form and to question the predominantly negative conceptualisations of this type of family. It re-conceptualises transnational care as a set of activities that circulates between home and host countries - across generations - and fluctuates over the life course, going beyond a focus on mother-child relationships to include multidirectional exchanges across generations and between genders. It highlights, in particular, how the sense of belonging in transnational families is sustained by the reciprocal, though uneven, exchange of caregiving, which binds members together in intergenerational networks of reciprocity and obligation, love and trust that are simultaneously fraught with tension, contest and relations of unequal power. The chapters that make up this volume cover a rich array of ethnographic case studies including analyses of transnational families who circulate care between developing nations in Africa, Latin America and Asia to wealthier nations in North America, Europe and Australia. There are also examples of intra- and extra- European, Australian and North American migration, which involve the mobility of both the unskilled and working class as well as the skilled middle and aspirational classes.

Book Description
How do Chinese, Japanese and Korean mothers in Britain make sense of their motherhood and employment? What are the intersecting factors that shape these women’s identities, experiences and stories? Contributing further to the continuing discourse and development of intersectionality, this book examines East Asian migrant women’s stories of motherhood, employment and gender relations by deploying interlocking categories that go beyond the meta axes of race, gender and class, including factors such as husbands’ ethnicities and the locality of their settlement. Through this, Lim argues for more detailed and context specific analytical categories of intersectionality, enabling a more nuanced understanding of migrant women’s stories and identities. East Asian Mothers in Britain will appeal to students and scholars across a range of disciplines and with an interest in identity, gender, ethnicity, class, migration and intersectionality.

Book Description
The astonishing success of Japanese corporations throughout the world has transplanted millions of Japanese into foreign lands, but returning families face a crisis--a problematic, sometimes traumatic reunion with an inward-looking culture. Drawing on scores of in-depth interviews, Merry White explores the personal and social consequences of a problem that is fully recognized as a national issue in Japan. She pays particular attention to the plight of the returnee Japanese child--a stranger in his or her own land. "In this knowledgeable and perceptive book, [Merry White] describes how families who have returned from prolonged sojourns abroad endure damaged careers and spoiled educational prospects."--Joan Cassell, The New York Times Book Review "An invaluable source of insights into the problems that Japanese overseas face and the strategies they pursue, both in adjusting to life in foreign countries and in preparing for what may or may not be a hospitable welcome when they arrive back home."--Theodore C. Bestor, The Journal of Asian Studies Originally published in 1992.
