Book Description
This book, as a volume of the Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library, is primarily concerned with the fundamental theory of detonation physics in gaseous and condensed phase reactive media. The detonation process involves complex chemical reaction and fluid dynamics, accompanied by intricate effects of heat, light, electricity and magnetism - a contemporary research field that has found wide applications in propulsion and power, hazard prevention as well as military engineering. The seven extensive chapters contained in this volume are: - Chemical Equilibrium Detonation (S Bastea and LE Fried) - Steady One-Dimensional Detonations (A Higgins) - Detonation Instability (HD Ng and F Zhang) - Dynamic Parameters of Detonation (AA Vasiliev) - Multi-Scaled Cellular Detonation (D Desbordes and HN Presles) - Condensed Matter Detonation: Theory and Practice (C Tarver) - Theory of Detonation Shock Dynamics (JB Bdzil and DS Stewart) The chapters are thematically interrelated in a systematic descriptive approach, though, each chapter is self-contained and can be read independently from the others. It offers a timely reference of theoretical detonation physics for graduate students as well as professional scientists and engineers.

Book Description
Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion covers the proceedings of the Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on August 27 to September 1, 1962, under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. The book focuses on the processes and reactions involved in combustion. The selection first offers information on flame strength of propane-oxygen flames at low pressures in turbulent flow and mixing and flow in ducted turbulent jets. Topics include radial profile of the jetting velocity, radial growth of the jet, and mixing zones of a ducted jet. The text then elaborates on turbulent flame studies in two-dimensional open burners; turbulent mass transfer and rates of combustion in confined turbulent flames; and flame stabilization in a boundary layer. The publication examines the theoretical study of properties of laminar steady state flames as a function of properties of their chemical components and spectra of alkali metal-organic halide flames. The text then takes a look at the thermal radiation theory for plane flame propagation in coal dust clouds; flame characteristics of the diborane-hydrazine system; and studies of the combustion of dimethyl hydrazine and related compounds. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the processes and reactions involved in combustion.

Book Description
Gas Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems documents the proceedings of the 6th Colloquium held at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, 22-26 August 1977. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Astronautics. The scientific program included over one hundred papers. The contributions in this volume are organized into four parts. Part I contains papers on gaseous detonations. It covers topics such as theoretical model of a detonation cell; spherical detonations in hydrocarbon-air mixtures; and shock wave propagation in tubes filled with water foams. Part II presents studies on explosions, such as the detonation of hydrogen azide and propagation of a laser-supported detonation wave. Part III examines condensed phase detonations. It includes papers on the mechanism of the divergent and convergent dark waves originating at the charge boundary in detonating liquid homogeneous explosives with unstable detonation front; and initiation studies in sensitized nitromethane. Part IV presents discussions on turbulent detonations, covering topics such as the computational aspects of turbulent combustion and problems and techniques in turbulent reactive systems.
