Book Description
Research Paper (postgraduate) in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this research was to gather data on personality differences which were affecting teachers teaching methods. The study was necessitated by having scenarios where Chinese’s students exhibited different learning styles due to the different personality traits. As a future teacher I felt the need to conduct this research and back up several studies that had been done on English learning as a foreign language. The study also checked and evaluated how personality differences affected learning and the personality effects in teachers teaching methods for Chinese college students. The study used qualitative study using literature review as methodology and described in-depth the conceptual philosophy, study strategy, data collecting procedure and techniques, strengths and limitations and ethical issues that were taken into consideration. There are different research philosophies that governed the study with qualitative research including ontology and epistemology. The research reported and discussed the cultural trends and the attitudes as well as approaches that Chinese college students had to their studies. The study also found out that Chinese college students used the major learning styles of rote, silent and passive. The study found that personality traits associated with students have a significant influence on the success of learning English as a second language.

Personality as a Factor Affecting the Use of Language Learning Strategies
Author: Jakub Przybył
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031252551
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
The book explores the relationships between the personality traits of Polish university students learning English as a foreign language and their use of language learning strategies (LLS). It provides a solid theoretical background for the investigation of the interface between the two constructs, describes the applied analytical procedures in detail, and reports the results and implications of a large-scale study. Chapter 1 presents multiple perspectives on the investigation of human personality and presents insights from a selection of studies into the role of personality in foreign language learning. Chapter 2 addresses the construct of LLS, while Chapter 3 links strategy use to other individual learner characteristics, with a focus on personality. Chapter 4 sets the methodological framework for the empirical investigation, describes the rationale for conducting the study, and includes a thorough description of analytical procedures. Chapter 5 presents the results of the study and highlights their pedagogical implications. Finally, limitations of the study are presented and some directions for future research are suggested. The monograph will be of interest to scholars investigating the role of personality in SLA as well as graduate and postgraduate students in applied linguistics.

Individual and Contextual Factors in the English Language Classroom
Author: Rahma Al-Mahrooqi
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030918815
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 393
Book Description
This edited volume examines a number of topics related to the roles of individual and contextual factors in English as second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) settings by presenting chapters across the three sections of theoretical and pedagogical approaches, teacher and learner research, and research into the roles of technology. The book has a focus on practical actions and recommendations related to individual and contextual factors in ESL/EFL, with a specific concern with issues of cognition, metacognition, emotion, and identity, and offers perspectives from a diverse range of international education settings. For teachers of ESL/EFL, the effective recognition and integration of individual and contextual factors into the classroom may represent a significant challenge. This is often the case in those settings where native English speaking teachers work in foreign language contexts where they may have limited understanding of local cultures and languages, or where language instructors have class groups that are culturally and linguistically diverse. In these, and similar, contexts, the types and extent of individual and contextual factors impacting on language learning may challenge both learner and instructor expectations of what an effective and supportive classroom is. While such a situation offers numerous opportunities for learners and teachers to expand their knowledge of themselves and each other, it also presents the possibility for ineffective teaching and learning to occur. It is within this framework that the book presents the latest theoretical, pedagogical, and research perspectives from around the world, thereby providing a resource for all stakeholders with an interest in the roles individual and contextual factors play in the English learning process.
