Book Description
Textbooks are an important part of the teaching in secondary education classroom, particularly for teaching world history. They provide the basis for almost all points of discussion and learning. The study focuses on students' assessment of their textbook in the areas of content bias, visual organization and readability and how these affect students' overall attitude toward the study of world history. A survey was administered to students to assess their world history textbooks. The survey covered the following areas: content, bias, visual organization, readability, and student interest levels in history. The researcher hypothesized that textbooks had a negative impact on student attitudes toward the study of history. This hypothesis was not supported by the data obtained from the study. Rather, it was found that not only did the subjects have a high level of interest in the study of history but they also did not feel the textbook, although important in studying history, influenced their attitudes toward history.

There are so many books on so many aspects of the history of the United States, offering such a wide variety of interpretations, that students, teachers, scholars, and librarians often need help and advice on how to find what they want. Globalization and English Education in Taiwan
Author: I-Chung Ke
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000485390
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
Ke’s book examines and reflects on English education in Taiwan from a global English perspective, starting with a discussion on globalization and global Englishes. English education in Taiwan has gone through various major transformations since the intensification of globalization after the 1990s. On one hand, children start to learn English ever earlier while on the other hand, the curriculum and materials in the vocational schools and at the tertiary level become diversified to meet various specific needs of English use. Internationalization of education has brought increasing numbers of international students, and the roles of English in Taiwan are changing constantly with the dynamic environment, from a foreign language to a lingua franca, medium of instruction, and an international language. In his book, the author documents the historical development of education and the roles of English in Taiwan before reviewing curriculum reforms and changes in the past half century. He then presents teachers' and students’ perceptions on global Englishes. He proposes global Englishes' pedagogies and his views on what changes can be made to textbooks, learning materials, entrance exams, translation, and the linguistic environment. Practical suggestions to English education in Taiwan in the globalizing context serve as a tentative conclusion for the book. Offering insights into English education and its relationship with globalization, Ke’s book will be useful to researchers and students in the fields of global Englishes and English education as well as offering practical pedagogical suggestions for English educators around the world.

The Status of World History Instruction in American Secondary Schools
Author: William E. Pulliam
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
The one-year course in world history, popular in some quarters, does not seem to have made much headway. High school level courses on world-history are one of the many responses to the World Wars, yet said courses have never been recommended by a committee of national scope on which there were any historians. Opinion surveys among teachers and students indicate that no other part of the typical social studies program is more criticized than the tenth grade level one year elective world history course. These courses are increasing in number, textbooks are multiplying, and a few interesting experiments are being worked out--yet there is no general agreement on organization, scope, objectives, teaching strategies, or assessment in these courses. This document is a summary of historical and recent surveys on curricular trends in social studies with regard to world history, to help educators assess what impact they may have on the teaching of world history in the 1970s.
