Book Description
Hodgkiss and the Shack in the Woods Hodgkiss and the Wrong Rifle Hodgkiss and the Open Door In this, the eleventh volume of the Hodgkiss Mysteries, Edgar Hodgkiss is confronted with three examples of that most baffling of all forensic challenges ... a body found in a locked room with no way in or out. How can the killer leave the scene of the crime without a trace? These three cases demonstrate three different ways in which such a crime can be committed and they demonstrate, too, Hodgkiss' genius for unravelling the most complicated crimes in his usual aggressive and uncompromising manner. These three cases, The Shack in the Woods, The Wrong Rifle, and The Open Door, provide three different solutions for what looks at first sight to be three insoluble problems.

Trevilian Station, June 11-12, 1864
Author: Joseph W. McKinney
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476623201
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 361
Book Description
In June 1864, General Ulysses Grant ordered his cavalry commander, Philip Sheridan, to conduct a raid to destroy the Virginia Central Railroad between Charlottesville and Richmond. Sheridan fell short of his objective when he was defeated by General Wade Hampton's cavalry in a two-day battle at Trevilian Station. The first day's fighting saw dismounted Yankees and Rebels engaged at close range in dense forest. By day's end, Hampton had withdrawn to the west. Advancing the next morning, Sheridan found Hampton dug in behind hastily built fortifications and launched seven dismounted assaults, each repulsed with heavy casualties. As darkness fell, the Confederates counterattacked, driving the Union forces from the field. Sheridan began his withdrawal that night, an ordeal for his men, the Union wounded and Confederate prisoners brought off the field and the hundreds of starved and exhausted horses that marked his retreat, killed to prevent their falling into Confederate hands.

The Gatling Gun
Author: Peter Smithurst
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472805984
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 81
Book Description
A unique chapter in the history of firearms, the multibarrel, hand-cranked Gatling gun was one of the first practical rapid-fire weapons ever to be used in battle. It changed warfare by introducing the capability to project deadly, high-intensity fire on the battlefield, and portended the devastation that automatic weapons would wreak in World War I. During its 50-year career, it saw widespread service with US, British, and other forces on a host of battlefields through conflicts in Zululand and the American West, to the Spanish-American War. Although it saw widespread use in the hands of industrialized nations against various groups of indigenous native warriors, it was famously left behind by Custer at the battle of the Little Bighorn, where some argue it could have made all the difference. Featuring full-colour artwork plus contemporary and close-up photographs, this engaging study investigates the origins, development, combat use, and lasting influence of the formidable Gatling gun.
