Economic Development and Employment Projects

Book Description
The Hmong Resettlement Study is a national project carried out in the US by the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the Department of Health and Human Services. The report 'Economic Development and Employment Projects' forms part of this study, and contains the results of an analysis of projects and enterprises promoting economic self-sufficiency. Twenty-two ventures in four main categories are examined: sewing projects; farming projects; grocery stores; and, 'other enterprises'. Each description contains information about origins, goals, organization, operation, social factors, achievements and lessons relevant to others. Most projects are characterized by the concept 'learning by doing', but the report concludes that there is general ignorance of, or failure to use, available sources of experience and expertise. There are grounds for optimism in that traditional Hmong interest and talents seem to be adapting to the American way of life, but it is too early to pronounce success.
