Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Church of Christ, Vol. 1 IN my Proposals for printing this history of the church of christ, I promised an Ecclesiastical History on a new Plan. The Reader there fore will naturally expect some distinct account of a Plan, which in a sub jcet so generally known, lays claim to novelty, in order that he may judge for himself whether it appears sufficiently interesting to engage his perusal of the Work itself. It is certain that, from our Saviour's time to the present, there have ever been persons whose dispositions and lives have been formed by the rules of the New Testament men who have been real, not merely nominal Christians: who believed the doctrines of the Gospel, loved them because of their divine excellency, and suffered gladly the loss OF all things, that they might win christ, and BE found IN It is the history of these men which I propose to write. It is of no consequence with respect to my plan, nor of much importance, I believe, in its own nature, to what external Church they belonged. I intend not to enter with any nicety into any account of their rites and ceremonies, or forms of Church government, much less into their secular history. Even religious controversies shall be omitted; except those which seem to bear a relation to the essence of Christ's religion, and of which the history of his real Church requires some account. Let not the Reader expect that the actions of great men - great in a secular view I mean - will be exhibited to his notice. Nothing, but what appears to me to belong to Christ's kingdom, shall be admitted: ge nuine piety is the only thing which I intend to celebrate. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Church of Christ, Vol. 2: Containing the Fourth and Fifth Centuries The encouragement, which I have received from a generous public, induces me to persevere. Be sides, the peculiar advantage of a work of this kind is, that it is capable of perfection, so far as it proceeds, without needing any support from subsequent parts. It is not like a connected thread of argumentation, which must be read throughout, before the full force of any particular portion of it be discerned. Excerpt from History of the Church of Christ, Vol. 2 Divine Providence punished the Saxons by the invasion Of the Danes, the most lawless and the most savage of all mortals. The great Alfred was indeed raised up to de fend his country against them. And, one of his speeches, delivered to the soldiers, before a battle, displays, at once, much good sense and a spirit of religion. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Church of Christ, Vol. 2 of 3: From the Diet of Augsburg 1530, to the Eighteenth Century; Originally Designed as a Continuation of Milner's History The state of religion in Switzerland, at the commencement of the sixteenth century, presented the same melancholy aspect as in other countries. There were circumstances which rendered improvement even less probable than in most of those which received the returning light of the gospel. While the simple character of the people afforded a ready opening to the appeals of superstition, their political condition still further favoured their close alliance with the papal court. Emancipated from the yoke of Germany, by as bold an effort as had ever been made by an oppressed people, they naturally became the ally of the Roman pontiffs against the power of the Emperors. This alliance was sedulously fostered by the Church; and no means were left unemployed which could tend to keep the Swiss in a state of servile obedience. Both Berne and Zurich set an example of complete subjection to its will; and as they formed the bulwark of the new confederacy, their advice was willingly adopted by most of the other cantons. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vol. 2: 1836-1844 The reception that Volume 1 of the Church History met from the members of the church and their friends greatly encouraged the Board of Publication to urge forward the second volume. The work of selection, compilation, and arrangement was continued diligently, Apostle Heman C. Smith giving faith ful attention to this part of the work, aided at separate stages by the committee of examination and revision. The second volume covers the difficult period between 1836 and the death of the presidents and martyrs, Joseph and Hyrum Smith, in 1844. It was found so impracticable with the original design of furnishing an authentic and reliable history, and complete it in two volumes, that the Board decided it to be better to do the work thoroughly, though it should require a third volume to make it what the completed work should be. It is in this spirit and intention that the Board takes pleasure in placing in the hands of its patrons Volume 2 of the Church History. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Vol. 7: Period II, From the Manuscript History of Brigham Young and Other Original Documents "All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an Ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye." - (Isa. xviii:3) On the cover of each of the six preceding volumes of this series of the History of the Church, Period I, there has appeared in low relief an indent-gravure of some prominent place: the Hill Cumorah, the Kirtland Temple, the Liberty Prison, the Nauvoo Mansion, and the Carthage Jail; and for this Period II, volume VII, since it brings us in its action into Salt Lake valley, a Utah subject of first importance is selected, viz. "Mount Ensign." It is generally referred to as "Ensign Peak." Elder Woodruff, among those who first climbed the Mount, says in his Journal entry of that date - July 26, 1847: "We went on the top of a high peak in the edge of the mountain, which we considered a good place to raise an Ensign. So we named it 'Ensign Peak', or 'Hill'." Captain J. W. Gunnison, refers to it in his The Mormons, 1856, (pp. 33-4), as "Ensign Mound." President Young refers to the Mount as "Ensign Hill," on the occasion of recording the incident of Addison Pratt receiving his endowments on its summit, in October, 1849. Book Description
Excerpt from Young People's History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vol. 2 N the beautiful city of Nauvoo young Joseph Smith was quietly working and studying; some times thinking, too, about the work of his father. There were men who talked to him about going out to the western land and joining the rejected church, where he had every reason to think he would be treated almost like a king; but he knew how his mother had op posed that church and her reasons for doing it. There really was no particular thing out there that he de sired; but he grew to believe that somewhere in the world there was a work for him to do and that work was with his father's church.
