Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Gambling in England The Chinese and Indian games of skill, such as Chess, are of great antiquity; but, perhaps, the oldest game is that of Enclosing, called Wei hi in Chinese, and Go in Japanese It is said to have been invented by the Emperor Yao, 2300 bc. But the earliest record of the game is in 300 b.c. It is a game; like Kmeg spi, el a game of war. There are not only typical representatives of the various arms, but the armies themselves, some 200 men on each side; they form encampments, and furnish them with defences; and they slay, not merely a single man, as in other games, but, frequently, hosts of men. There is no record of its being a gambling game, but the modern Chinese is an inveterate gambler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gaming Table, Vol. 1 of 2: Its Votaries and Victims, in All Times and Countries, Especially in England and in France N o doubt gambling, in the sense treated of in this book, has ceased in England. If there be here and there a Roulette or Rouge et Nair table in Operation, its existence is now known only to a few sworn-brethren if gambling at cards prevails in certain quarters, it is kept quiet.' The vice is not barefaced. It slinks and skulks away into corners and holes, like a poisoned rat. Therefore, public morality has triumphed, or, to use the card-phrase, trumped' over this dreadful abuse; and the law has done its duty, or has reason to expect congratulation for its success, in putting down gaming houses. Book Description
Excerpt from Betting Gambling: A National Evil Until comparatively recent years, betting and gambling were largely confined in this country to the wealthy few. Now, however, the practice has spread so widely among all classes of the community that those who know the facts name gambling and drinking as national evils of almost equal magnitude. There is no doubt that the social conscience is as yet only very partially awakened to the wide spread character of the gambling evil and to its grievous consequences. Like a cancer, the evil thing has spread its poisonous roots throughout the length and breadth of the land, carrying with them, where they strike, misery, poverty, weakened character, and crime.
