The subsections listed beneath include more specific topics on a myriad of subjects like Pontiac's Conspiracy, Natural Resources, Forts and Block Houses, and Amusements of the Pioneers. Subjects of particular interest include encounters with the Indians, the building of the Wabash and Erie Canal, and a lengthy description of the Underground Railroad including the names of families whose homes served as stations providing food and shelter along its routes. There is obvious pride reflected in the stories of citizens who risked their lives to help slaves reach Canada and freedom. A communal belief in liberty for all men is demonstrated by their service to the Union during the Civil War. Jackson 218 Union 440 Liberty 152 Jefferson 228 Colfax 128 Sheridan 174r Monroe 148 Harrison 123 Total.... 3,003 Two petitions were offered in October, 1872, opposing the levying of a tax to pay interest either on the railroad bonds of the " Ten-mile Strip" or of the Chicago & Southwestern. LAWSUITS, ETC. The year 1872 was prolific in law suits. The County Court ordered suit to be commenced against all who were in arrear to the county. The Flints, O. H. McGee, Richardson et al, all carne in for a chance to pay up, or take the consequences. The railroad suits were also on hand with no prospects of immediate trial, and the 3"ear ended with but little to show, outside of a bill of costs. The name of Grant township was changed to that of Jamesport, November 7, 1872, by petition of 170 of its inhabitants. The tax levy for 1872 was $1.30 on the $100. The levy for 1873, without railroad tax, was $1 on the $100. THE SUPERVISORS. The election in April, 1873, for township officers resulted in making several changes in this Board of Supervisors, which, like the year before, was composed of fifteen members, one from each township. The new board was composed as follows: -- Grand River township, B. G. Kimball; Lincolu township, Nathan Nichols; Washington township, William Adams; Salem township, B. H. Coffey; Benton township, Henry Rainey; Marion township. J. E. Grantham; Jamesport township, R. C. Williams; Jackson township, William Smith; Union township, B. F. Stout; Liberty township, William Prewett; Jefferson township, Wesley Lee; Colfax township, S. R. Gurney; Sheridan township, George E.
